Buddhism stated with Buddha, he was disappointed with life in the sense world....so he wanted higher answers and he got them....the story is long, basically he grew up in luxury and did not know anything about disease or old age ...one day he went out of his palace and has seen a old person, a dead person, a disease stricken person..and a crippled person...he was disgusted with the world, left his palace, became a monk and sought after enlightenment which he got after rigorous practice.
and with caste of Hindus, Hindus divided people on the nature of their work ...for example, Brahmin's were scholars they worked on metaphysics and religion, the Kshatriyas were the kings, and they were responsible for the protection of the country...
the vaisyas were business men, merchants...people who made money...and the sudras were people like barbers, cleaners..who used to get paid for a certain work like the above..
Hindus believe that after death, they will be reborn, and this cycle of births and deaths will continue until one attains enlightenment..
and, a person who seeks spiritual knowledge and strives for it in the present life will be born in better circumstances in his next life which will make it easier for him to concentrate on spiritual pursuits..
I just read some of the answers, and what you have to know is caste system was not introduced by ashoka, but by the ancient aryans..who wrote the vedas and was called varnasrama, and yes buddhism is an offshoot of hinduism, and no people can change their caste, ie. if you are a brahmin, but like to be a king you can be..and will be called a kshyatriya, the system was very flexible...

My Answers:
1. Not sure, but think that it was started by King Ashoka as he was upset with some formalities of the Hindu religion.
2. Caste System plays an inporatnt role in Hindu Rel. Every caste is given with it's task to perform it's own job & not to interfere in the other's. For e.g. Only BRAHMINS can perform POOJA in temples & not any other caste persons.
3. Acc. to Hindu Mythology, after the death the spirit goes before the God & he then decides, after evaluating the work done by that person on the earth ( good or bad), that whether the spirit will rest in heaven or will pay for its bad works in the Hell. even if a person has done many good works or "PUNYA", then he/she will get rid of getting birth again.

One can think of Buddhism as an offshoot of Hinduism in much the same way that Christianity sprung out of Judaism. Sort of like a reform movement which took on a different meaning and became its own religion.
The caste system is (if you pardon the pun) increasing becoming cast out of Hinduism although it still plays a huge role.
In Hinduism, many Hindus believe that your "caste": in the next life is based on how you live your life in this life- so it determines whether you are promoted or demoted, so to speak.

Some of these religions or beliefs were started LONG before Chrstianity. If you remember Abraham & Isaac the created to seperate religions If I remember correctly The religion we know as Christianity is from the line of Abrham and Islam is friom the family of Isaac. I may be wrong on the names but it did stem from the seperation of two brothers around this time Abraham being one of them.
