Don't let him out at night let him out in the morning and bring him back in before dark. Other people suggested keeping him inside, that is very difficult to do especially if he wants to go out. Because he spends so much time outside and his luck isn't the best make sure to watch for fleas and ticks. I would also suggest that you get him a vet check up about every 2 months for about 6 months then every four months from then on. don't forget to keep his shots up to date.
I know my plan sounds stupid, but I know what you are going through. My cat was like yours and I thought he was just getting into things he shouldn't and he would learn with time. At that time I had two cats. I let them both out at night and I let them in the house in the morning. Well my stupid cat got scratched in one of his eyes one night and when we took him to the vet, they said he had gotten into a fight and he was now blind in that eye. I had to put eye drops in his eye twice a day. That lasted for a week, then he stopped coming home. I still see him around my neighborhood. He is in bad shape and he doesn't remember me at all.

With my other cat I changed the time I let her out, and at night she sleeps with me. It is really cute, she waits around until she sees me going up stairs then she follows.

I hope your cat does better than mine!

First thing I would do is stop letting him go outside. For him to have injuries where there is no visable cause, kind of tells me it's a person causing him harm. For his own safety, keep him indoors and take him to a vet for a good health check. I have an individual 2 blocks over that is known in the neighborhood for hurting any cat that comes into his yard, and you quite possibly could have the same thing. You are right, you would know if he was in a cat fight - they bite - they scratch - but they don't break bones. Ask around and see if anyone else in your area has had the same experience with their cats. The fact your cat is so friendly is a mark against him in this instance. As he probably will go up to anyone thinking he's going to get some loving. Keep your baby inside with you.

I know this has been said a few times but you shouldn't let him outside. He might be getting beat up by a larger animal like a raccoon or another wild animal. Which is also not good because he might get sick or worst yet get something like rabies! Also you need to be taking him to the vet if he's hurting or if he's having fevers. There is no such thing as an animal being careless- it's you who is being careless! Your the mom and you have to make the decision for your cat! DO NOT LET HIM OUTSIDE ANYMORE. You'll both be happier and buy him some toys and play with him!

Another vote for not letting him outdoors at night or any other time. Cats DO NOT need to go out, and even if you aren't hearing it, doesn't mean he isnot getting into catfights. Cats roam large areas when they are out, and his fights could be blocks away where someone else hears them.
Outdoor cars are SO much more likely to fall prey to larger cats, dogs, fights with racoons or other animals, cars and mean people who might torture them or simply grab them and sell them to a research lab. YES this does happen!
If you have not had your cat fixed, do so. This will make him much less likely to demand out, and less likely to fight if you insist on letting him roam the streets.
Cats are not careless. Owners can be.

You sound like a fairly intelligent person, too bad you don't have any common sense.
Your cat is going places he shouldn't be, getting into fights, picking up illnesses form other cats and probably eating allot of junk he shoulden't be.
Suggest you make an indoor cat out of him, this will take care of your problems and will be cheaper then all the vet bills ( If you even bother taking him).

get him neutered.

Wow! Your cat sounds just like my weird cat. We have to run her to the vet at least once every 2 months because she's done something to herself. We call her adventure cat. She also loves people and is very affectionate. Your cat is probably just very adventurous and having too good of a time. That's what I've finally concluded about mine.

Some cats should not let out for their own good,
I have four cats two of them are natural hunters and can go anywhere, the other two never go out they are more a danger to themselves.
However if you think your cats is being deliberately hurt You should not let it out.

Don't let him outside, duh!!! Maybe he is getting into fights with another cat or maybe a larger animal is hurting him. Maybe you should give him to someone that would take good care of him, it seems like you don't.
