Enterprise Resource planning application; Integrated system that link all information within only one system; Reducing redundancies and providing on line Provisioning information and updated information.
Leadin softwares are used within bigger market companies like Volkswagen, Arcelor, Telecoms everywhere.
Leading ones are SAP,Oracle, PeopleSoft / Oracle ERP.
J.D. Edwards, BAAN are older and are not competitive anymore. PeopleSoft are most common in USA meanwhile SAP R/3 in Europe. SAP are te gbiggest one, but are facing huge adversary - Oracle.
Usually, medium and small ERPs softwares have huge market participation in development countries, once their prices are lower and have lower implementation costs despite the fact that they are basically developed to that country and are more flexible about law and financial rules.
There are no best ERP. Everything depends about your company and several other factors. To choose it, you must consider the size of your company and what are your needs.
You must consider: Size of your company, how many process you will generate? How deep your ERP must be? Do you will integrate Finance, Production Planning, Maintenance, Service, Controlling, Material Maangement, Travel Management? How many modules you will need and how deep should be your interface. Sometimes, verticalized ERPs are better than those Stars mentioned above.
To choose ERP, we discussed about what do you expected and what are your company needs and how deep your system will me integrated.
After, you must consider your company Process Maturity (IMy conseil is check CMM concepts) lower process maturity decrease ERP performance, once ERP are basically constructed over Process and instable process can bring your ERP implementation down.
You must check Implementation cost and determine your ROI (Return Over Investiment) and se if its ok.
Answering. There are no best ERP, are possible alternatives to each case. It isn't like 1+1, but several varaibles that can bringo many solutions and you must choose the best one based on your market feeling and some benchmarking.
Talking about Huge companies with necessity to integrate many branches and provide global reporting; considering well consolidated software and volume of prepared (and experienced) analysts, I would choose SAP ERP installed over Windows server plataform and Oracle Database. (But still many ifs and possible combinations. It can change after deeper analysis)
Wish luck in your search;
