Sonoran, Be sure your bosses know you intend to move to the day shift. There are a lot of negatives about the night shift -even when you adjust and begin sleeping more. If a slot doesn't open up within a year or two, move on to a day shift elsewhere. It's not worth the money. Working during the night is also an indicator of some cancers. There is a lot of research being done about sleep and night workers. I worked an on-call job for 18 years. It is so destructive to your health. You even lose your skills for the work. Don't stay with it long. It doesn't look good on your resume when you accept the poor conditions for long. They start thinking there must be something wrong with you because you had to stay there too long. Be sure your use of sleep aids is limited, too. Good luck.

I know the feeling on that. I use to do the third shift for many many years. Let me tell you it can kill you or worst make you really sick. I did not get very much sleep and also was not eating right. Your best bet if you could would be to find another job, or see if you can switch to dayhours. If that is not possible right now. Then you need to when you first come home make sure you eat something. Take a shower, and go to bed. Set your alarm clock so you are not waking up in panic about what time it is. Eventually you will get use to sleeping in daytime. You also half to make sure your room is really dark and you also need to buy yourself sometype of sound machine. So that will knock out alot of outside noise. I hope this was helpful to you and goodluck.

I work third shift also. I take cat naps. 15 and 30 minutes. They really help at work. I use my cell phone at an alarm clock. Wake up to a fast paced song. Stay away from the caffeine drinks. They just make you gain wait and give you a short burst of energy.

That happened w/ me too. I found myself only sleeping 4 or 5 hours because I would wake up w/ the sun. If that's your case, before you go to bed, make sure that your blinds/curtains are close tight so the sun won't wake you up. If not, you can always take a sleeping pill. I recommend Melatonin. It regulates your sleep perfectly!

I work third shift and found it helpful to black out my bedroom windows and turn the air conditioner on high. When it is cold your body naturally wants to shut down to conserve heat and the absolute darkness helps by not disrupting your sleep pattern. To black out the window you can spray paint them or like me tack a heavy weight black blanket over them.
