Major advantage of a gate valve is that it decreases the amount of shock given to the system.
Gate valves are open & closed at a slower speed then many others valves. This can be both an advantage and a disadvantage. The advantage is that the water is increased/decreased within the system slowing causing less shock on the system. The disadvantage is the time that it takes to get the system opened/closed fully.
Another disadvantage is the gate valve could get something stuck under the gate and not be able to close all the way.
Has many other various advantages and disadvantages but mostly dependant upon the application of which you are using it.

Here's some I can think of. As always, selection of valve type depends on several factors, like service, duty, reliability, etc.
Advantages:
Cheaper, especially in larger sizes
Application for many different fluid services
Can provide a tight shutoff
Disadvantages:
Seal can become ineffective if not "exercised" regularly.
Foreign material can get caught in seal, blocking gate from sealing.
In manual operation, takes many turns to open and close valve.
Cannot be used as a throttling valve.

Also these valves are not used as control valves. They are moinly used as shutoff valves for the larger utility systems.

Advantages: It’s seal-ability is better than that of a globe valve, and fluid impedance is small with easy to open and close. When it is fully open, the sealing face is less eroded, and it is not restricted by the flow of medium. Besides, Gate valves feature double-flow and smaller structural length, resulting in a wide applicable range.
disadvantages: Their size and opening height is huge and they need larger installment space. When it is open and close, the friction between sealing surfaces is easy to cause scratch.
And their two sealing surface will adding to the difficulty to processing, grinding and maintenance.
