That is a thought-provoking question. The answer necessarily pivots on the definition of right and wrong. Who determines the standard? The laws of a certain land may say this particular act is right – acceptable. A higher authority (if one accepts such) may say it is wrong. Without ascertaining who sets the standard, there is no frame of reference within which to respond to the question.

Moreover, if one were to say it is alright to do the wrong thing for the right reason, the implication is that sincerity and heart-felt motive outweigh the standard. But is that really so? It all points back to the standard - there must be a standard first and the one who sets the standard must have the authority to do so and the ability to enforce it. Else, the question, in effect, becomes meaningless.

The Former. An example of doing the wrong thing for the right reason would be to lie about something, in order to convert someone to ones own religion. (believing that ones religion is right, of course!) Doing the wrong thing for the right reason, would negate the reason.

There is never a wrong reason to do the right thing.

Very thought inspiring question. Thank You.

It is obviously correct to do even a wrong thing for the right reason because whatever done for a right reason would be right even if it is wrong !!! (sounds confusing .. isn't it... but it is actually NOT if you do it in practical life)

Doing the right thing for the wrong reasons: you hurt yourself either way, but you only hurt yourself if you do the right thing for the wrong reasons.

Always do the right thing. Reason - whether right or wrong - are relative. Relative to the subjects (or person's) view. You can't start a war to correct someone...two wrongs can not make a right.
