Most possibly is that it was the reaction when the digested food got in to the stomach.

the reaction is just like when you plunge something solid into a pool of liquid, there will be some gas escaping...

Our stomach was just like a pool containing digestive liquids and enzyme, thus, the digested food "plunges" itself into the stomach, thus the gas escapes, this, and the movement of the muscle made the rumbling sound in our stomach
