My baby takes a long time around 45 mns to 1 hour to finish her food plate. I want to know whether even after 1/2 hour the food is worth eating b'coz there is always this risk of bacteria forming ?

My kids often had the same problem, but in Scotland it is cool most of the year. If the food is fresh and uncontaminated (which it should be) then an hour at room temperature is not going to be a problem. If there are flies around, then there is a risk of contamination. Similarly, if it is very hot, bacteria will multiply quicker, the food will get dried out and less tasty. I used to chuck out my younger daughter's plate and get a row from my wife because she knew the kid would come back to it 30 mins later.

I would however consider why she is taking so long. Is she allowed sweets and snacks between meals? Is the food boring? Is it tough to eat? Does she fill herself up with juice first? Does she think that the food is too hot or too cold and needs to be left to cool down/ warm up? Is she staring at the TV and distracted from the plate in front of her? Are you or other kids eating with her to encourage her or is it a solitary chore for her?

Have you tried making the food easier to eat or more tasty for her? Finger food can be small (non-choking) bits of fruit, cheese, pasta, pizza, meat etc. Variety in her diet will make her more likely to eat quickly as the same old stuff every day is boring. Is she active enough to work up an appetite?

An old man once told me that "Children are like dogs: if they are hungry they will eat, if they're not hungry they won't" After three kids of my own I am inclined to agree with him! My wife plays games with the youngest, now three years, pretending that one of the other kids is going to eat the food from their fork. Try pretending that a fairy has made the food disappear when they eat it.

If she is very small she should of course be fed by an adult.

generallly speaking food can spend four hours in the temperature danger zone (40°-140°F) before too much bacteria forms to make the food unsafe to consume.

Bacteria will begin producing when the food cools down (below 140°) and continue to double in number every twenty minutes. If you cook it again, you can consume it safely.

Food high in acid (pineapple, papaya, mango, etc. can hold almost indefinetly.

Go ahead and feed your baby her food after 1 hour and not worry about it!
