You are 100% correct. Just like the ban on hand guns in the city. Only the law abiding people comply. The scum still have hand guns. It is exactly the same with pit bulls. It is the people that abuse them they should go after, not the breed.

Law abiding owners of anything are not the problem. The ones keeping them illegally or for illegal uses are often the problem but they don't care about laws so it makes no difference. As for banning - NO I don't believe it does any good. Too many people treat dogs as humans instead of DOGS and by nature of DOGS that leads to dominance issues - when it's so called "dangerous breeds" it's often the fault of the owner not the dog. People also need to consider what the "unprovoked attack" is - I know of one person probably claiming unprovoked attack - from a Doberman. The fact is he was outside the Doberman's owners kitchen at 230 AM - with a knife. This is known for fact because the Doberman was stabbed requiring many stitches. Aggression and territorial traits are something we selected and bred dogs for - as watch/guard/protection dogs. Now those traits are there and people who don't know what to do with them and don't realize the heirarchy of DOGS get one and get in trouble. It's not the breed. There are documented fatal dog attacks in many breeds including labradors. Those don't make the front page like a pitbull attack does. There was a fatal attack - several dogs packed together including two half Pyrs that killed a woman near Nashville TN not long ago - dogs in a pack of 3-4+ will do things they wouldn't do alone. Pyrs by nature are gentle to PEOPLE - not to other dogs or coyotes. Sound like another breed?
I've known pit bulls/AmStaffs - whatever name/breed people tend to lump together - who were awesome dogs. They were friendly and happy and healthy. But it was well known you didn't go to the house after dark without calling first.

I agree....those who are not responsible pet owners ARE NOT going to worry about a law. Also, there are new and much more vicious dog breeds then the pit bull. Some of these dogs are impossible to handle even for their owners. The answer is to make "dog fighting" - "dog baiting" COMPLETELY illegal. There are currently ways to get around what laws there are. As well as those on the border states drive to Mexico to fight their dogs there. I do not understand when dogs show such perfect love, why their maiming and torture could be considered SPORT. I love dogs and do not understand how this can still be allowed.

You just answered your own question, It's not the dogs that need to be banned, it's the people that do these things, that raise thesed dogs in this way. If raised correctly, a pit bull will be a loyal guardian. My dog has been raised in a loving environment with alot of positive reinforcement (will work for a treat) and she is a wonderful dog. But, she did eat my feathers. J/K The people that raise thier dogs to be fighters/killers should not be allowed to have these animals. But how do you screen for this? There are so many dogs in this country, and so many more people, It would be next to impossible to keep up!

True. It is the owners that should be held responsible for the actions of their pets. There are no bad pets but bad owners. If owners were held responsible for their actions, had prison time or major fines, I think attacks would go down. German Sheaperds, Doubermens, Pit Bulls, and other breeds are always getting bad reps when it is the owners fault and they should be held responsible. A slap on the wrist and letting them go is not going to do it. It is just to easy for people to get away with this and they are not punished for their actions. Dog fighters should be tracked down and punished so they will not do it again in another city.

Great post Jan!
Many of peoples problems with their dogs stem from the fact they treat them as if they are children, instead of like the animals they are. I cannot believe how many people have no idea how to handle their animals. Our culture has gotten so out of touch with the nature of animals.
And I will say it (yet) again. The answer to our dog problems are ENFORCED leash laws. No animals roaming, few dog attacks, and dogs would not be making their own breeding decisions out on the street. We don't need any more nasty anti-dog laws, just enforce the one that works!

Yes, some good. But you are right.
Though the actual number of attacks don't go down the total damage has gone down. Though by no means pit-bulls are dangerous dogs by nature, the training they get and their natural build make them killers.
Now the 'danger-dogs' are different ones. Making pit-bulls the fallguys wasn't a good idea. Same as in closing a street to prostitution doesn't help getting prostitution down.. it will move to a new location.
