In John 4:7-38, there's a story about the woman at the well talking with Jesus. She says to Him in verse 25, "I know that Messiah is coming, He who is called Christ..."
Jesus responded by saying, "I who speak to you am He."
For those who claim Jesus never professed to be G-d, or to be the Messiah, why would Jesus make this comment?
Thanx.

Because He was the very God who took the form of man for the purpose of dying for the sins of the world.

Jesus believed himself to be the messiah that the Jews needed at the time; someone who would save them from the Romans and would rule as a fair and just king.

Unfortunately, it didn't work out. The Romans took offense that someone was preaching sedition and ddecided to have him killed. To make matters work, Jesus was also wanted by the Saducees, a heretical Jewish sect which rejected notions of any messiah and put the priest class on top. (Jesus was a Pharisee, a rabbi, and was for the common man. That's why he tells people to listen to the Pharisees, for they are the ones who sit in Moses' seat.) The Romans, with help of the Saducees, kill Jesus.

Jesus was very popular, and some people couldn't cope with his death. Instead of concluding that he was a failed messiah - and not the only failed messiah in Jewish history - they changed their beliefs about the messiah's mission and purpose. Suddenly, Messiah becomes a spiritual term - to save mankind from sin. And Jesus' failure to save his people is entirely hidden.

Later, when the Temple is destroyed and Jewish suffering becomes extreme, when Jesus' failure could not be any clearer, the claim becomes that the Jews are suffering because they did not accept Jesus - even though the Hebrew Scriptures never discuss any command for Jews to have a belief in a Messiah.

Soon afterwards, the Christian Bible was written. In an attempt to spread the belief to the Romans, the Romans were whitewashed and the Jews were villified.

In the latest gospel, John adds a divine dimention to Jesus, making him a son of God. If Jesus knew, he'd be rolling in his grave.

You've heard of one person dying for a lie even when they had the chance to take it back right? Two? Three? Twelve? I am talking horrible deaths just to keep some work of "fiction" as some call it going. Do some research into how the 12 Disciples died. Beheading, stoning, bludgeoned. The apostle John was put in to a boiling vat of oil and managed to survive. He was sent to an Island called Pathos where he wrote Revalations. He, nor any of the other of the apostles EVER recanted their words, beliefs, or belief in Jesus Christ. All they had to do was tell their persecuters that it was a lie and their life would be spared, but they didn't. And this is documented in books that aren't in the Bible!! Imagine that!! Now, who would die for a lie like that? When in the history of the world has any group of men died for a lie like that? Never. Look it up, the answer is never. Convolute everything however you so choose, but that is a glaring fact your other historians, scholars, and newspeople of that day did document. Proof in itself.

Jesus is NOT God he is the SON OF GOD! Jesus IS the Messiah.

Within Christianity, the doctrine of the Trinity states that God is a single Being who exists, simultaneously and eternally, as a perichoresis of three persons (personae, prosopa): Father (the Source, the Eternal Majesty); the Son (the eternal Logos or Word, incarnate as Jesus of Nazareth); and the Holy Spirit (the Paraclete or advocate). Since the 4th Century AD, in both Eastern and Western Christianity, this doctrine has been stated as "One God in Three Persons," all three of whom, as distinct and co-eternal "persons" or "hypostases," share a single Divine essence, being, or nature. Supporting the doctrine of the Trinity is known as Trinitarianism, and is opposed to the positions of Binitarianism (two deities/persons/aspects), and Unitarianism (one deity/person/aspect), which are held by some minor Christian groups.

In Judaism, the Messiah (מָשִׁיחַ Standard Hebrew Mašíaḥ, Tiberian Hebrew Māšîªḥ, Aramaic משיחא) initially meant any person who was anointed by a prophet of God. In English today, it is used in two major contexts: the anticipated saviour of the Jews, and one who is anticipated as, regarded as, or professes to be a saviour or liberator. Jews, however, do not generally use the word "saviour" in reference to the messiah, primarily because of the Christian connotation of the word "saviour."

In the first century, Jews interpreted the prophecies of the Tanakh to refer more specifically to someone appointed by God to lead the Jewish people in the face of their tribulations with the Romans. Christians believe that these prophecies actually referred to a spiritual savior, and consider Jesus to be that messiah. The word Christ (Greek Χριστός, Christos, "the anointed one") is a literal translation of "mashiach" used in the Greek Septuagint version of the Bible, and derived from the Greek verb χριω "rub, anoint with scented unguents or oil, as was done after bathing", "anoint in token of consecration" (Liddell & Scott's Greek-English Lexicon).

In Islam, Jesus (Isa) is also considered the Masih, or Messiah, and his eventual return to the Earth is expected with that of another messianic figure, the Mahdi.

Some speculate that the Jewish concept of the Messiah did not arise as depicted in the Hebrew Scriptures, but rather originates in the Zoroastrian idea of Saoshyant. For similar figures in other religions, refer to the "See also" section in this article.

The Septuagint, an ancient Jewish translation of the Old Testament into Greek, translates all thirty-nine instances of the word messiah as Christos. The New Testament records the Greek form Μεσσίας, Messias, only twice, in John 1:41 and 4:25.

Not to offend, but as an atheist I think Jesus was either one of the greatest conmen to have lived or he had serious disillusionment. According to textbook psychology, claiming to be god is a sign of hysteria and mental disorder - ranked only higher by animal cruelty. It's even got a name 'God Complex', many dictators get this sort of syndrome - a feeling of immortality, and utter control of life and everything surrounding it!

There were thousands of egotists around at that time claiming to be the messiah. If he existed at all, JC was only one of many. Man created God.
