on letting my mate use my p.c for the night,he decided upon himself to download and install several updates from the microsoft download center(security updates)
my question is will any extra or unnecessary updates harm my system or shall i not worry about it
they were proper updates from microsoft,he said they were from the first 4 pages of security updates
any ideas?

any unnecessary update will just take space but would not harm your computers performance
most users cannot not determine which update is required or not thats why it is suggested that you download all that are recomended

You can check which updates were downloaded by going again in Windows Update and selecting the proper item in the left menu (under Options, "Review your update history").
Same results if you look in the System Restore in your pc (with WXP): you will find checkpoints for the downloaded updates. Eventually, you are still able to restore your system to an earlier date (I would not suggest this, though).

Usually not a bad thing unless you are doing illegal things, I noticed one update checked to verify you have a legal copy of XP. Usually if you have updates that need to be done its good to wait a while for the bugs to get worked out but not to long when you are left vulnerable to what the patch is trying to fix. I can't give you much info since I do not know which updates he did, the updates listed are whatever MS detirmines are most critical to your system, take it for what its worth anyways, I wouldnt worry about it.
