Well it doesn't hurt as much as if you don't get the fillings and end up with a toothache - trust me on that one!
The jab is like a little pinch, it does hurt a little bit but only for a minute and then you go numb. After that, no pain. You feel pressure and stuff and there are some funny sounds which can be quite scary, but it doesn;t hurt once you're numbed up. I'd advise you take a CD player with you and listen to music during the fillings so that you can't hear what's going on. They probably won't do all your fillings at the same time, they usually only do one side of your mouth at a time because they don't want your whole mouth to be numb, so you might have to go back a few times to get all 5 fillings done. And after that, brush your teeth twice every day and floss every day and hopefully you won't get any more cavities!!!

Talk to the dentist about your concern before the work is done. Dentists are familiar with the anxiety many people feel before having work done, and they have ways to deal with it.
In my experience having dental work is certainly not fun, and there is some pain (doctors like to call it "discomfort"), but it is NOT horrible if you have a good dentist who is aware of your concern.
The jab is a pinch, and then, once the medication takes affect, your mouth is numb. If you still feel what the dentist is doing, stop and ask the dentist for more medication. Wait until it has time to take effect fully, then resume the treatment.
After the dental work, your mouth may be sore for a day or two, but it really isn't all that bad. Believe me, dental work is a LOT less painful than a toothache, which you will end up getting if you don't have the cavaties repaired!

Trust me, a jab is like a short, sharp sting, which is a hell of a lot less than if you have a filling without one.
Once the area is numb, the dentist can work on the cavity without you feeling any pain - there will be some sensation / vibration etc..but it will not actually hurt. If you don't have them filled, the holes will get bigger, and then you will need "root canal" treatment, and you really don't want to have to go there.

you need to explain to your dentist you are concerned about pain, he or she should be able to put you at your ease. the painkilling injestions arent as bad as you think, and once they have kicked in you wont feel a thing. the worst bit for many people is hearing the drilling, if this is the case why not take an ipod or something, then you wont hear it, and it may well relax you. whatever you do, attend the appointments, your teeth cannot repair themselves and the problems will only get worse. best of luck x

Ask the dentist to numb the area before the injection. You may still feel a bit of a sting but it won't be bad. After the injection you won't feel any pain while he is drilling and the end results will be great! Good luck!

Sometimes dentists do small fillings without an anesthetic. For bigger cavities however, you definitely do want a local anesthetic. The jab only causes a minor discomfort for a few seconds... oh, and it makes you slur your speech for a few hours... and drool drinks all over yourself for the rest of the afternoon :-)

The injection is a local anasthetic which will numb your jaw and lip so that you fell any pain. Believe me it is quite painful without the injection! I tried it once, NEVER again! Having numb lips makes for entertaining speech, get some cartons of drink with straws or else your drink will go EVERYWHERE and don't eat until the anasthetic has warn off as you will wind up eating half of your lip.

No it shouldnt. Root canals work in a similar way and they drill to remove the root canal because of decay in the tooth. People often assume root canals are painful and actually they are not. Getting a filling done should not be painful.

If it hurts that much ppl would not visit the dentists. If anything especially in the UK we are all fighting to get on a dentists list. Speak to your dentist I am sure he will put your mind at rest.
