They lock the doors so you don't walk in and catch the priest giving the alter boys a little extracuricular tuition.

and to stop people nicking all the stuff collected for next weekends jumble sale.

The church is not too concerned with the occasional trespasser, it's the thieves and robbers that causes the locking of the doors --- and probably causes your door to be locked too...along with the rest of us. (Amen).

Why should trespassers be be be forgiven? You mean for trespassing? Judging from your grammar you probably don't know what trespassing is - or maybe you're just trying to make a lame joke.

They will be forgiven of course, but in our church someone keeps nicking all the tasty biscuits (they are for the sunday school) so we have to lock all the biccies and cakes and drinks in a cupboard! I think it's those theiving little Brownies...

When Britain was a Christian society the Church doors were always open, but now they have to protect the place from thieves.

I'm afraid there have been too many thefts, wilful damage committed in Churches everywhere.

Although i would add that Catholic Churches are always open during the day. But there is someone about, maybe not in the Church itself but about anyway!

Unfortunately thieves will steal from churches (and probably other holy buildings too), they look the doors to prevent theft. It quite sad that things have got this bad really.

They don't worry about trespassers - they worry about thieves who will steal religious icons - which have value in the antiiquities market.

some churches lock the door as what the first person answered to protect them from thieves...
but some doesn't close the door, for some churches literally everyone are welcome.
