Take the Downtown number 6 subway train at 33rd St. and Park Ave. to Astor Place (4 stops). Then walk about 3 blocks West to Wash. Sq. Park.

In New York, streets are 20 to the mile and avenues are 10 to the mile. So if you want to walk it's 2 avenues to 5th Ave and 33 streets to wash sq. park, total = 2 miles.
Fifth ave is one-way south, so you can walk the 2 ave blocks to Fifth, and take one of the buses that goes straight along - - you'll see the arch through the bus windshield as you get close!

Check out http://www.hopstop.com - it will give you directions between any two locations in New York. According to the site, you can take the 6 downtown, then switch to the B going uptown to Washington Square. Alternately, I would probably jump on the subway to Union Square, then walk the rest of the way.

There are old townhouses around Washington Square Park. So the walking distance is less than one block.
