Because they ignore what God says about not making statues.

Many people say "We don't pray to the statues they are just symbols that help us focus on God."

The ancient Greeks, Egyptians, Romans, etc prayed to statues of Zeus and other gods and they knew that it was not literaly Zeus. They knew that it was only a symbol. So yes you are praying to the statues or else why would GOD say not to do it. When you make idols you don't elevate your concept of God rather you debase it by confining an omnipotent, ominpresent God into a "graven image".

Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of ANY THING that is in HEAVEN above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.
Exodus 20:4

There are better answers than mine and I think you have to go back to St. Augustine, but many Christian churches not just Catholic ones have statues/pictures but people are NOT praying to these icons. They are symbols of what Christ or maybe a prophet or disciple have done but only to remind us or tell a story. I have never been in any church that prays to an object like you describe.

Because they don't take the command in Exodus 22:20; 34:17; Deuteronomy 12:30-32; 13:1-10; 17:2-3; Romans 1:18-23 and other passages of the Bible seriously.

It is not only a ritual in Christianity. it is a ritual in many other religion across the world. Human psychology need an object or a direction to pray. prayer is self hypnosis. idols are widely used to be a point to practice prayer. it is a reality that people are attracted to objects. Tell me a name of famous tourist place without a good big structure existing in this world. that's pointing fingers to how humanity is related to objects.

Catholics do not pray to statues. The statues are there simply as a reminder to pray to God.

The Catholic Church actually took the 2nd Commandment away and (DAN.7:25)"tried to change the day of worship to Sunday". The 9th and 10th say "not to covet".

They are actually sinning against the 2nd Commandment and other commandments-- Exodus 20:3-5,8-10.

We don't pray to them. They're decoration. Catholic churches are way more hardcore than protestant ones. I've never been to a protestant church and saw a bleeding Jesus hanging on the wall with thorns in his skull. See em at Catholic churches all the time.

Because no one was allowed to learn to read other than the heads of the church (plus the bible was in latin) so the statues told the story.
