having been in Iraq, I am totally shocked at how different the reality of the war is from how it is covered. We captured Saddam, killed his sons and Zarqawi and created a democracy in the Middle East, one that has higher levels of participation that in our own country. Yet all I hear are about mis-steps and allegations.
I don't get too down about it though, think of it this way. Do you ever read about good cops? Nope, only the bad ones make the news. We live in an age when a doctor can replace your heart with a donor heart or a Jarvik heart- which is like something out of science-fiction- yet you never read about stuff like that.
It's not that the media is liberal or anti-war, so much as it is negative.

In the first instance, criticising the Bush government is how we (admittedly I'm a Brit, but I'm also a journalist) keep reminding ourselves that when history judges the man, we'll be able to say we "didn't inhale" his mediocrity, didn't support it, not even for a second, no sir. From his dubious win of the first election, he was always going to face that kind of thing, just in case history actually proves what so many suspect - that he stole the election and turned the concept of democracy entirely on its head. In the event that that happens, we have to be able to feel like the good guys - like we did when Nixon fell.
As for pulling out of the war in Iraq...the initial media strategy was bungled by the administration. If they'd said "this guy is a dictator that's waging a Stalinesque war on his own people, so we're gonna go get him, which not even my daddy could do...and oh by the way, we might stop in for some oil on the way, because if we don't, the price of gas is going to go through the roof. Any questions?", most people would probably have shrugged and let him get on with it.
Because he linked Iraq to Al-Qaeda, while not investigating his oil buddies in the Saudi Royal Family, the Iraq war has taken on the mantle of an "unfair war", and every time a soldier dies, the violins will play because - and this is important - nobody is actually sure what "our job" in Iraq is. Regime change? Done, technically. Democracy? Problem there is democracy encompasses the right to vote not to have a democracy, so what do we do - stay until Iraq can be "trusted" not to vote democracy out of existence? But most people now don't believe there was any altruistic purpose in turning the "war on terror" against Iraq, and the fundamental flaw of waging a war on terror is that there's no more guaranteed way to make more people implacably opposed to you than by marching into their country and shooting their families stone dead. So as long as we're there, it's arguable that the "terrorists" will keep coming - just like the Viet Cong did a generation ago - we're effectively making them as we go along. Hence the idea in the media - get the hell out, and maybe people won't want to kill us quite so much...

Regardless of the politics involved or the reason we are over here, the bottom line is it hurts us......the soldiers, and no one seems to care. Everytime they show "new" pictures of Abu Ghraib or Haditha - WE are the ones that feel it. It fuels the insurgents. Never mind the fact that the "new" pictures aren't "new" at all. That's just one example. The insurgents over here think that we all hate Bush and don't stand by him because that is what the media portrays. Bush is our Commander in Chief and rather than waste time slamming him, people should be supporting us. We feel forsaken in the midst of all this chaos, the republicans, the democrats. the insurgents. Everything else is more important than us. When was the last time you saw on the news anything good that has come of this war. The soldiers that help rebuild schools, or roads, give medical attention or other aid such as food and water, how about all the jobs we have provided to help rebuild Iraq as a whole. Then it just takes one thing on the news to change the mind of the people we are striving so hard to help. We are trying to win these peoples trust, win their hearts and minds and give them their freedoms back. All it takes is negativity from the media and they decide to plant a bomb on the side of the road. The media doesn't realize that for every action, there is a reaction.....and we are the ones that are dying because of it!!!

Sir, you are a fool , defeat whom, the Iraqi people , come on , they have nothing against us. I'll tell you this, George Bush and his Illuminated administration are the only causes of terrorist activities worldwide. They are not causing terrorism, they are creating it and passing it off as Islamic radicals, insurgents, or any number of Al Queda groups. Bush ordered Nick Berg beheaded he had the same done to Daniel Pearl, and he has murdered hundreds of Americans, trying !to fool lazy followers like you !you bit,~hook, line & sinker, you fools! We invaded Iraq to steal their oil and resourses. We are currently building military bases through out Iraq to control the middle east, and to protect murdering thieves Israel.

Great Question!! I agree with all you said. it's unbelievable what they do and cause. CNN all weekend long showed Osama tapes at least 4 times each day. I emailed them and asked why are they trying to recruit terrorists? They always glorify the bad guys. All the terrorists have to do is wait and they will own Iraq, thanks to the media and the Democrats.

If you really believe it's terrorists we're fighting in Iraq, you need to learn a thing or two about the middle east.

Very simple. They are either anti-American or the types that believe peace comes thru weakness, or both.
