Yes, it's true!

The link between sleep deprivation and weight gain has now been proven scientifically. According to research conducted by Dr. Sanjay Patel from Case Western Reserve University, middle-aged women who sleep five or less hours nightly weighed more than five pounds more than those who get seven or more hours of quality sleep, were 32 percent more likely for big weight gain and 15 percent became obese.

The Case Western researchers analyzed the diets and physical activity levels of 68,183 women, but failed to find any differences that could explain why women who slept less weighed more. They actually found that women who slept less, ate less!!

Another researcher, Eve Van Cauter from the University of Chicago, has spent 25 years doing research on the hormones that are affected by sleep. She says sleep deprivation activates a small part of the hypothalamus, the region of the brain that also is involved in appetite regulation. Sleep deprivation increases levels of a hunger hormone and decreases levels of a hormone that makes you feel full. The effects may lead to overeating and weight gain.

So, whichever scientific paper you feel like quoting, stay awake and you'll get fat!

Losing sleep can raise levels of hormones linked with appetite and eating behavior, the researchers said.

In one study, people who slept only four hours a night for two nights had an 18 percent reduction in leptin, a hormone that tells the brain there is no need for more food, and a 28 percent increase in ghrelin, which triggers hunger. The young men in the study also tended to eat more sweet and starchy foods when sleep was cut short.

Your body doesn't somehow accumulate more fat just becaues you are sleeping less.

However:

More hours awake = More hours to get hungry = More hours to dig into that jar of Ben and Jerry's.

And that's how you'd gain weight!

I have insomnia & I weigh 93 pounds. I think that blows that theory out of the water. I wouldn't worry about it.

you may do... they recommend that you should get at least 6 i think... but if you don't sleep then your body can't really burn off the calories it would have done if you were asleep. unless you exercise a lot. but i can't see people exercising instead of sleeping... they'd probably be too tired.
