Not only Spanish... I speak Portuguese and live in Florida, which has a lot of Hispanic people, and whenever I talk with my mum, we have a bunch of people that think we're speaking Spanish, or a bunch of Spanish-speaking coming over to talk to us... And I'm crap with Spanish.

Mexico is just one of the many countries that speak Spanish. Any latino knows that, unfortunately the majority of the anglos are unable to tell the difference, just like they're unable to tell the difference between Asians. Mexico is after all, their closest neighbor and usually their only contact with the language, for a limited time, so they really have no basis for comparison. Ignorance is the cause, harmful Hollywood stereotypes are also to blame. Don't take it out on the Mexicans, there's a saying in Spanish that goes: Ay, pobre México, tan lejos de Dios y tan cerca de los Estados Unidos. Mexico is considered to be part of South America, that's basic geography, and I've seen that mistake made in several worldwide company sites. That only goes to show that for many Americans Mexico is their backyard....along with the rest of South America.

yes. I'm mexican descended, but if I were from colombia, for example, I would be upset if I were called a mexican. Mexicans aren't the only group of people who speak spanish. Latin America is so diverse, and its people are so unique and interesting. It is so unjust that the ignorant people in the world have to assume that every spanish speaker in the world comes from Mexico. Yes, the language unites all Latin Americans, but it doesn't bind them to one specific nationality!
I feel that when it comes to Latin America, Mexico is always neglected or put at the "back burner". Mexico is technically part of Latin America, and, although it doesn't represent all latinos, it should be presented just as proudly as, say guatemala or venezuela should be.

I actually don't care what people think I am. It's not my fault that I look like a white girl when I bleach my hair and it's not my fault that my skin is not as brown as other latino's. I can't speak spanish either...but, nevertheless, I am a Mexican. I wasn't born there nor have I ever lived there, but I am Mexican and it is my culture, and so when people assume that I am Mexican and they assume that I come from Mexico,,in part they are right!

Yeeesss.. I get tired of it! Im Guatemalan and I dont like it when someone assumes im Mexican just because I speak spanish. It makes Mexicans seem better and bigger than the other latin countries. We are all equal and each country deserves to be reconized. Latin America has many similarities but also differences. The biggest similarity is that we all speak spanish! This makes me feel very proud to be a latina but I would like to see Guatemala presented in a better way. Not just Guatemala but all the other countries in Central and South America.

Latinos aren't only those whom speak Spanish. What about Italians, Portuguese and Brazilians, that are called Spanish by some, without being Spanish or speaking Spanish at all?

hi
not really, it just shows how geographically illiterate average Americans are, they think that anything or anyone south of the border is Mexican, never mind trying to explain the differences between all Latin American countries, they just don't get it, as of why do they think everyone with black colored hair and darker skin is automatically labeled Latino and should know Spanish it is just good old prejudice they are good at that

I totally agree, everytime someone hears me speaking Spanish they ask me if i am Mexican. I also used to have an Ameirican friend who said that i was Mexican but i told him i was Colombian and he would always go like what ever every time he said that i felt like punching him really hard on the face.
good luck.

I'm a white girl and I even get offended when people assume that just because someone is latino/a ...or even just a darker skin tone...that they're Mexican! From my experience, I've found it's just always more polite and easier to just gently ask!
