Well, there is one thing that would help.

70% of all inmates are in prison for drugs or drug related crime. These are predominantely for drug crop products that 100 years ago were legal.

Pharmaceutical companies and the US makes billions selling synthetic pain killers to the rest of the world while seeking to maintain prohibition. Unfortunately, the consequences for such evil is a high domestic prison population.

Decriminalisation does not mean a flood of drugs. It means those that have a genuine addiction are properly treated, not put in jail. It also means the revenue of drugs goes to the Govt and legitimate business, not criminals and pharmaceutical bosses.

Such humane, moral and sensible policies would change the whole issue of prison overcrowding overnight. Will the Govt change it? Not until people riot for change in the streets. Guess who the largest donors for many election campaigns in the US are? Yep, you guessed it, pharmaceutical companies...

I think the best thing to do is line them up in the back of the jail or prison and shoot them dead. In fact start at the juvenile level when they start acting like jackasses and shoot them then and we'll have no problems. I work in a jail and i see stupid kids come in day in and day out and they NEVER change. I say just kill them while they are young and that should end some of the problems.

Legalize drug use, tax and regulate the sale of drugs. Give it the same consideration as alcohol.

The majority of those in prison are there on drug related charges. By regulating the sales and distribution of drugs, you put the drug dealers out of business. Also, it will insure that the drugs will be safer (no rat poison, drain cleaner and the like), the price of drugs will likely go down because more places will have it available for sale. Create stiffer penalties for those who continue to sell it illegally, and charge them with tax evasion and lack of sales permits…just for good measure.

Illegal importation will slow down because no one will be buying the overpriced cut stuff. And the government has a new source of revenue from which to pull.

The sad truth about the justice system is that most of the people on prisons are there because they crime they committed is somehow connected to narcotics. Now the intelligent thing would be to legalize narcotics and regulate it but that would mean our upstanding police forces would have virtually nothing to do.

Tell poor minorities to stop breaking the law.
Make prison so bad, so hard, so punishing that noone wants to go there. Right now it's merely a school on crime that gangster thugs use to learn more criminal skills.

Deposit the truly dangerous socio-paths and repeat offenders in large, deep, open pits with armed guards above ground to stand watch and don't feed the scum... let nature take its natural course, while the more sane and moral society is allowed to live and prosper with decreasing exposure to criminal activities and such. Or, maybe just spank them a bit until they cry and promise to be good, taking them at their word...
