That depends on whether you avtually know him/them, and whether they provide good service or not.

Good service = 15% per year.

And yes, they DO appreciate it. At least mine does...
If we don't have it on the curb in time they even come around behind the house and get it for us (as long as it's not an everytime thing).

well being one of these people your asking about i can tell you you tip them whatever you feel is right. It's always nice to have some sort of thank you for doing a job most people wouldnt do if there life depended on it. I work in a town where we lift every can by hand still(that's 4 1/2 - 6 tons a day). There are those who give you something every week and others who only tip at christmas. It's not expected but nice to recieve. I know most places you get charged for putting out more then your service is for. If you leave a small tip ( bottle of water, soda, cookies,a thank you note) the person picking up your garbage wont charge you for the extra stuff. Just saying "hi" to the person will allow you to get away with stuff others cant..It's surprising how many people wont even say hi..enough said...have a gr8 day

I've never tipped a garbage man in my life. Ok, it's a crappy job, but these days the guy doesn't even get out of the truck. Are we supposed to tip every person that performs some sort of service? We'd go broke if that were the case.

That being said, if you think your garbage man does an exceptional job, a small gift is fine. I wouldn't make it any more than $50., but that's just me.

Throw away something worth a lot? Seriously I don't think that tipping the "sanitary engineer" is necessary unless he did you a favor of some sort. Perhaps then a tip might be in order. Other than for that reason I cannot think of ANY reason to tip the garbage man unless . . . never mind. Rule of thumb I suppose would be that you shouldn't tip the garbage man more that you would tip a Maitre Di . They handle your food and he handles your rubbish. You can do the math. Good luck.

Garbage collector(s) - $15-30 each. Nowadays, most garbage collectors are really truck drivers. The truck has an arm that does all the work. If this is your situation, there is no need to tip. Below is a link on tipping etiquette.

Sometimes, the best tips are the unexpected ones. Instead of tipping at Christmas - tip on an ordinary day with a card that says "just because" or "thanks for what you do". I would say no more than $20 each time - maybe you could do it twice a year. If you don't have the money, then make some cookies or other sweet treat instead. I can't tell you how many times an unexpected treat by a customer has made my day!!!

Why do you feel a need to tip the garbage man? Do you have an urge to tip the mail person too? But if you do, maybe $10 will do for a big cup of coffee for xmas.

Does one man only work on the garbage truck.
When we lived in N.Y. one man drove and two collected the garbage. It would have been rather expensive to tip. In any case, I don't think most people tip their trash collectors unless, of course, one of them does something beyond the call of duty for you.

Tip the garbage man? Now that's a new one on me. Do you tip the postman, or the bus driver, or the cashier at a grocery store too. Not me. They all get a decent wage. As far as I know only a waitress gets tips as they get a lower wage because of it.
