If u want to develop desktop applications using Java then download J2SE 5.0. and refer to book Java2 Complete Reference to learn Java. Also download Netbeans.. It is the IDE (Integrated Development Environment) to develop programs in Java with lots of features like Compiling, Debugging, Code Help, Code Folding etc..

If u want to just view the websites having Java Applets or run applications like LimeWire then u need not to have Development Kit but only RunTime environment will do.. In that case download Java Run Time from java.com or java.sun.com.

what do you need Java for exactly?

If you're going to program and compile using command line, just download the J2SE, if you're going to do enterprise, web application, go for J2EE. If you just want to view some websites which have java application, download the JRE.
