I'm not sure why but the females ears seem to barely get dirty at all, on the flip side the male's could have a whole garden grow inside!...lol. All kidding aside...someone suggested I use baby or olive oil on cotton puffs, saturate them insert them into the ear and massage, keep changing the puffs until the come out clean, using less oil with each puff till its just a dry puff. Then I read on a mastiff site to avoid oil and to use diluted vinegar?? It seems to me that the oil actually is attracting the dirt! Can someone please advise, they are our babys and it bugs him, he's constantly shaking his head, even though I clean on a regular basis. Thanks everbody :)

Use a cotton ball dipped in peroxide and gently wipe the inside with them. Don't stick anything into his ear canal.

Your dog could have earmites in which case you need to get medication from the vet to kill the mites, if what you are seein is a dark brown and smells rancid it is probably mites or an ear infection. If this is the case you need to address the root of the problem first, then you can ask your vet for an ear cleansing solution to use once the initial problem is cleared up and use it on a weekly basis.

the shaking head part may be cause by mites. take him to a vet and have him check just to make sure. mites can cause the ears to look really dirty. if its not mites then your vet might carry a liquid ear cleaner. most products like this you just squirt in the ear and massage the outside of the ear. if they don't have anything then definatley skip the oil and the vinegar. your dog might have a reaction and then he will just shake his head even more, instead try just plain water or if it is really bad you can try a mild soap like dial or sensitive skin dove. to dry the ear after cleaning just take a paper towel or rag and ball it up and swab out the ear. DO NOT put your fingers in his ear!! his ear drum is very exposed and if you push you finger in it may rupture the ear drum. :)

It is easy for your kind of pup to get ear infections. Especially if they are more dirty in a season, he could be allergic to a pollen (mine is, as well!). If you want to correctly clean your dog's ears, relax him with a belly rub and get him to lay his head in your lap. With a cotton swab (Qtip) dip it gently in rubbing alcohol and water (evenly mixed). The Alcohol will kill germs and the water dilutes it to a safe level. GENTLY swab the dirt away, and please please please be careful not to shove the Qtip into the ear canal. If you can't get your index finger there, don't let the qtip there. Your dog will most likely not like this prodedure because of the alcohol smell and the fact that you are digging around in his ears, but he will feel much better when you are done. Keep this up before you bathe him. Good luck!

There is a bottle of ear cleaner you can get at a store or at vets. You just squirt it in and massage their ears a bit.

Sounds like he might have ear mites. My boston gets that too often.

Take the dog to a vet,and have him check for earmites and yeast infection, because that is normal for any breed of dog.
