All of the insurances that i have found, including the one offered through AKC seem too expensive to be helpful. You must pay the bill first, and then wait for reimbursement.
I found that the veterinary care credit card is the best insurance for practical use.
It is only good at vet clinics, and it makes sure that you can always pay the bill, even for major expenses. Then you pay it as a credit card, in payments, or all at once to save interest.
You can get in in minutes on line, but I wasn't comfortable giving personal info ever the Internet, so filled out one at my vet's.
I checked all vets within 200 miles, and they all accepted the card. You can learn more about it at>> http://www.carecredit.com/practices/veterinary/

Go to Banfield Pet Hospital in any PetSmart store. They have a Wellness Plan for puppies that covers all vaccines, fecal testing, deworming for roundworms and hookworms, Office Visits are always free, and it also covers a routine spay or neuter surgery. It's 99 dollars one time enrollment fee (never pay it again), and 19.95 per month for 12 months. It's a GREAT deal, but it does not cover illness or prescriptions, but you do get a 10% discount on things that aren't 100% covered. It saves you a ton of money so that should something come up that is bit expensive (an ear infection or wound), then you aren't broke from spending a zillion dollars on vaccines and surgery and stuff like that. It's SUCH a good deal, trust me.

If you keep your pet healthy and only want a pet insurance for yearly checkups, it's really not worth it to pay money every month. I think it only makes sense if you have an elderly animal with a diease that needs a lot of treatment. If you have a puppy, I would recommend that you just buy a shots pack at your vet's office, saving you money/

Before automatically assuming insurance is the best idea, add up your expenses and make sure you can afford the insurance and the up front payment. It actually may be cheaper to pay as you go.

I don't bother checking as I could never afford it for five dogs. However, one of my toy poodles broke her pelvis and it was a choice of putting her down or taking her to the Univ. of Florida Animal Hospital. She had surgery and remained there for 10 days. It cost $5,000, I'm still paying for it but she is surely worth every penny. Univ. of FL. is in Gainesville and they did a fantabulous job. I highly recommend them. When she was d/c'd I had to do physical therapy with her several times a day but she runs and plays now as she did when she was a puppy....She/they make me so happy!

I like the Banfield insurance. Has come in handy plenty of times, especially for puppy shots.

They're all pretty much the same. It's a great idea to insure your puppy while he's young. I've found VPI to be the best.
