I am moving to Burbank near the 134-freeway for a job and am new to the area. I need a spot that has great nightlife, is close to everything, a safe area, and has a short commute to work. A location that didn't require freeway driving to work would be preferable. I'm 22 and like to surf if that changes the consideration in terms of being near the beach. Thanks.

Burbank is really nice... but about 40-50min from the beach depending on the beach... But it's pretty safe and has some nightlife but then again Burbank is about a 15 min away drive Hollywood/Studio City or about 10min drive to the east is Pasadena... either of those places have plenty of night life and good places to eat or catch a show... But driving is a way of life in LA and where there cars there will be traffic.

Burbank is a very nice, safe, town, but it doesn't have a big nighlife scene. More of a family town, you know? However, you can always drive to those night spots. No big deal.
So I would say you should check out parts of North Hollywood (be careful, some of it is sketchy), or Studio City would be ideal because it's about 5 minutes away from Hollywood by freeway. There is also Valley Village, and a little further out is Sherman Oaks. All these areas are close to some good nightlife scenes and a good commute for you.
As for the beach, it's a good deal away from the Burbank area. It's on what we here call "The west side". Burbank is located on the "The Valley side". You could live there, but the rent will be much higher, and your commute will be dreadful.
You're 22! You have lots of time. Start working in Burbank and live around there. Get your bearings, and if you dont like it, you can always find work on the "west side". Yup!

Burbank is NOT near the beach, and traffic from the beach area to Burbank will SUCK. Get a different job - possibly in downtown LA - then you can live at the beach and ride the Commuter Express to downtown. Why would you move to the Valley or Burbank anyhow? The air quality is bad, the traffic sucks, rent is way too high. If you must live in California, then live at the beach - if not, you might as well live anywhere else in the country and save on rent or property prices.

I live in Glendale which right next to Burbank. It is an extremely safe area. If you go up to Universal Citywalk there alot of night spots such as Howling at the Moon and BB Kings. There are many great spots for nightlife in Old Pasadena and Hollywood. The rents are outrageous anywhere near the beach. A one bedroom or studio in the Glendale/Burbank area is upwards of $900 to $1000 a month. Get settled in your job first and get used to your job and surroundings first. Good Luck!!

First, look at a map. See Burbank? See the ocean? See how far apart they are?

I'm sorry to sound sarcastic, but do you know what it costs to live near the beach? I hope your new job pays very, very well. Oh, you're 22. Don't think so. Maybe you could find a rent controlled apartment in the People's Republic of Santa Monica (at $1500-$4000/month), but that's not very close to your work. What you could do is find a place in the West San Fernando Valley. You'd take the 101/134 to work, which is a *****, but you could drop down Topanga Canyon (30 minutes) to surf.

In Southern California, NOTHING is close to everything. You get to drive everywhere. At $3.25/gallon per gas. And we measure distances in terms of time, not miles. Now, don't get me wrong, I love living here, but you need to be aware of what you're getting yourself into.

Nightlife near Burbank - Citywalk at Universal.
