Common sense tells you that in order to be a better person you need to get knowledge and be street smart. If you have common sense, the other two will come to you...

"Knowledge is Power".
Knowledge can come from anywhere, school, streets, friends, experiences, anything. As long as you pursue knowledge that will enhance you as a person, a professional, as a human being, then the importance of your choices becomes all encompassing.
True Story:
Ever heard of the term, "Dumb as a box of rocks?"
Several years ago, I had an employee who transfered from another one of our offices (Banking) to my office. She worked as a collector. She moved here from New Mexico in 1993 and she had been with the company for 4-5 yrs or so. Over the course of the next few months I learned that she had a PHd in Psycology. I thought, cool and inquired about her desire to open up "shop" on her own. She claimed that she felt after 6 marriages, that she wasn't the best person to give advice. (PHd in Social Services) OK, whatever.
I directed her to the copy machine, one that would be in a major bank, she didn't know how to use it. OK, I showed her. I went to her desk one day and, amoung other things, needed to use her stapler. It didn't have staples, so I reached over to another desk, handed her a box of staples, she didn't know how to put them in. OK, I showed her.
Shortly, I called the manager of her old office in New Mexico and inquired about her. I will not go into what he said, but suffice it to say, I was really shocked. I was asked if I would go easy on her, she was a really good person and tried very hard, she just needed a little "babysitting" occasionally. OK, I agreed.
A few months later she was late for work and when she arrived she came into my office to explain, ok, no big deal, life happens. But, the reason she was late was she was pulled over, again, no big deal, S..T happens. But the reason she was pulled over was because her tags had expired on her N.M. plates and as a result, her car was towed and she had to take a bus the rest of the way. So, I asked why she hadn't changed her plates over to our state, and she replied, (Swear to God). " I didn't know how, and I wasnt sure where the DMV was". Needless to say, and after several other things between the time she transfered and this particular day, she had done some pretty wierd things. In any event, I gave her some info about getting her car back, registering it, etc. when she asked if I could give her a ride home. Sure, no problem...
It was in winter, and by the time we left the office it was dark. I took her home and she asked if I would like to come in and have some coffee. I said sure, so I parked the car and we went into her apt.
I expected that when she unlocked the door, she would walk over and turn on a light, but instead she walked over to a little table, lit a match to light a candle. She walked to another table, lit another one, when I mentioned that it was cold, and doesn't she leave the heat on while at work, she responded, (Again, I swear) " I don't have any electricity". I was really shocked, thinking I need to give her a raise, poor girl. ( I already was paying her 50K+ a year), when she began to explain, she had no idea how to get her electric turned on!!
I have to tell you, she had been in my office almost 2 yrs at this point, and since day 1, had no electricity. Now, it made sense why she was always bringing her make-up and blow dryer to work every morning!! Yes, she took cold showers, and used a propane stove to cook and occasionally boil water for a hot bath, for TWO YEARS!!!.
So, with a PHd, you tell me what is more important, knowledge, common sense or street smarts? OH, she was 46 yrs old!!
Her 6 and last marriage (that I know of, anyway) broke up because, this according to her now, " I could not figure out how to work the dishwasher"! Are we surprised???
To succeed in this world, you have to use the common sense God gave you, you have to learn about life a little, both bad and good, and you have to get an education. But, if I can only choose one, I will take common sense anyday of the week.
