I once heard a sermon, based on the book "icons and idols." The difference is this:
Idols become an object of worship.
Icons are used as a way to point you to God.

For instance, some people may need a special place to pray, or in the case of Roman Catholics, they may need a set of Rosary beads to pray. If the Rosary Beads are used as a way to remind you how to pray, then there is nothing wrong with that. But if you get to the point where you worship the Rosary Beads, then that becomes an idol.

Hope this helps!

To a simple person, it helps him to focus his mind at one thing and get his mind calmed down without which no progress is possible. May be you are better focused and hence the logical clarity. Yes, after a stage, when it becomes clear that God is not in a physical form, the statue worship will drop by itself. At school, do we not start with slate and pencil, and then drop it when we improve?
And to a very powerful person with enhanced mind powers, he can energize any object, so he chooses an acceptable object like statue and energizes it and now the energized statue helps a simple person to gain its benefit and experience calm. There is a vast, complex, perfected and time-tested science behind it, and the best examples are found in India, where Idol worship has been followed since centuries, and you can witness the energizing process even today(the prescribed periodicity is once in 12 years at least!).

It is mainly cultural thing. Some are brought up with worshiping idols, etc. in a very common and natural way. I believe most of those people don't really think about the wood or stone or gold leaves, but what it represents. Buddha statue just reminds them of Buddha and his teaching.
However, some do take it too far. A few drunks are killed or injured often when they challenge others to shoot or stab them thinking that their idols or tattoos will protect them!

Well, people who use statues to worship are really just using the statues sort of like a visual. God is different to all. Because you can't see the deity, a statue is used instead. It's but a symbolism. The statue itself isn't being worshipped. Rather, it is what the statue itself represents to the person.

One is not meant to worship Things, in my opinion. Statues belong in this category, along with any person place or thing. God seems to be inside, and outside, and in every stone, and blade of grass. No temple can hold God, no house can justify worship of a hanging statue, and to know ones own heart, is to know God! You can't buy your way into paradise, or practice your way into Nirvana! To look into the eyes of a person and see him as a soul, rather than a body, is to see God.

statues and pictures help one focus on what one wants to think about. They are nothing more than a focus point. I suppose that you think sitting in an empty room with only austere, straight benches is so much more inducive to contemplation and prayer. I'll bet you are a 14 year old pentecostal or southern baptist.

If god is omnipresent, he's there in all things. If even the leaves don't shake without his wish surely he's present in the wood too. If you donot see his divinity present in another human being what stops you from killing him/her for your benefit? If an idol helps me to pray everyday and find the light of god in my life so i'm a much kinder human being and respect all his creations by all means i will indulge in idolatory. I'd rather not kill 6 million jews coz they have different beliefs to mine. I would not collect jizya from people who have other faith than mine. I would rather not slay them in their sleep coz i believe them to be infidels. I'm happy being an idolator hindu.

the first commandment ....”You shall have no other gods before Me. You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.”
