Dogs do get periods and you will first notice swelling of her vulva (the skin fold under her rectum) followed by some discharge/mucoid blood and even spotting blood. You may get doggie pads at a pet store but the best thing to do is get her spayed to protect her from cancer and other things that endanger her as a result of not being spayed.

Dogs don't have periods.

You can tell if they are in heat if she yelps a lot or goes crazy when she sees another dog around.

Her vulva (vagina) will be swollen, and there will be a discharge. Starts clear, gets bloody, than is clear again.
