If you used websites like Hotwire, Cheap Tickets, Priceline, Lowestfare.com, any of the websites the advertise "cheap" anything, you are locked into a contract. Its in the fare rules that you state you have read and accept before purchasing. On these website, there are no changes, no refunds no nothing. The airline can not and will not touch these tickets.

If you purchased directly through an airline, depending on the fare you have 24 hours after booking to cancel any reservation and receive a refund now on most Domestic US carriers. After that, if you purchased a discount fare, they are non-refundable. However you do have a year from the date of purchase to make any changes. You can not change it to another person's name. But you can use the credit towards the purchase of another ticket plus or minus the difference in the fares. Look on your receipt, there is a fare code that is a letter. Just about every airline has the same designator for full fares. F-First Class, always refundable. Y-Full Coach Flexible fare, always refundable.

The only acceptable reason any airline or website would allow a refund would be a documented medical reason or a death in the family.

Go back and read the fare rules that come with your confirmation you received. That will explain your options. Its always safest to book directly with the airline, you will have more flexibility in your options.

It depends on the air. Most air is non-refundable and you will lose the entire cost of your ticket if you need to cancel. The only way out of this is if you have trip protection that covers your reason for cancelling.

If you are moving your dates, most airlines charge you to do this, usually between $50 and $100.

Some air is refundable, but generally costs more and is hard to find. If you purchased from an online discounter like Expedia or Orbitz, it is unlikely you will have a refundable ticket.

The best thing to do is read the fine print on the website where you purchased the ticket, on the ticket itself, or on the confirmation. You will usually find this information. If you are still unsure, call the airlines and they can give you all the information. Sometimes, air can be cancelled within 24 hours of booking, it just depends where it was purchased.
