I lived in Kansas City a few years while attending the University of Kansas Medical Center. Here is a list of ones that come to mind.

Savoy Grill- Hands down best fancy place to eat, it is in dowtown area. It is pretty high priced, but you get your own personal waiter and the food is immaculate.

Cheesecake Factory- Middle of the road, but what's great is it is at the end of the plaza, where you can shop a lot of great stores.

The Jazz- This is my favorite place I always go when back in KC. It is somewhat of a whole in the wall, it is on State Line Rd. Just straight east of KU Med Center. It is a cajun/creole joint and on Friday and Saturday nights they have live jazz. If you go you gotta get a bengiet (think I spelled it right) for dessert.

Genghis Khan's- Mongolian style barbeque just up the street from The Jazz

The Bronx- Best pizza in KC, just up the street from The Jazz as well

Fiorella's (Jack Stacks)- This one is in Overland Park on 93rd and Metcalf (I think). Great steakhouse, reasonable price.

KC Masterpiece- this one is near the downtown area, it is the epitomy of great KC barbecue, as you can imagine.

Manny's Resteraunt- 207 Southwest Blvd. excellent Mexican resteraunt, a fairly popular hole-in-the-wall joint that has had it's share of famous guests. Great food, fun place.

Honestly, the best bbq is Famous Daves... YUM! They have this platter for two that has ribs, turkey, chicken, briskett, fries, slaw. bbq beans, and corn muffins. You can choose from like six different bbq sauces to. For $22 dollars you and your friend can eat for two days with the amount of food they serve. They also have one for a group of four:)

If you want some good ol down home cookin' Neighbors Cafe in Lees Summit serves up some of the best home cooked meals, like open face r.b. sandwiches, and there sweet potatoes are out of this world and so are the sweet cinnamon rolls you get when you sit down!

If you want a great home made tenderloin, SidePockets Sports Bar and Grill has the best Tenderloin around! Comes with fries which you probably can't eat because the sandwich is SO big

and honestly... for just a REALLY good fried chicken sandwich, Go Chicken Go has a very tasty one. Most people go there for the fried gizzards, and they LOVE it. I personally stick with the chicken sandwich but to each his own.

Last but not least, for the best and cheapest all you can eat tacos I highly recomend Dixons Chili. They are known for there very famous chili, but I go for the tacos, and on Friday, there mountain pile high chili cheese fries topped with a heaping scoop of chili and gooy cheese, sour cream and onions if u want it are half priced. You get the appetizer and all you can eat tacos for like $9.00.
Interesting fact about that place, Teddy Roosevelt use to eat there all the time.

For barbecue, Jack Stack is the best, but Bubba's and Oklahoma Joes are good as well.

For Italian, definitely Zio's in Olathe/Independence. They have the best tomato florentine soup.

If you like Middle Eastern food, Holy Lands Cafe at 87th and Quivira will make you think you have died and gone to heaven.

LongBoards is really yummy!! (Well that might be in Gladstone, right next to KC) It's like.. mostly wraps... and it's a Pacific Islander restaraunt. It's a small little place, but I love it. Cabo Beef wrap rules! Their food costs about 5-7 dollars, but the wraps are huge. (at least, I usually eat one wrap for two meals)
