Of course, restrooms are dirty, and you better use a paper towel to touch things and sit on them. But a recent inspection by some tv company (I forgot, which one) showed a couple of rather more dangerous aspects. Nearly 60 percent of the public toilet operators in the US use hidden cameras to observe what's going on in the cabins. These cameras transmit between 1 and 10 pictures a minute to the observation centers of the operators. Though the pictures are said to be deleted immediately if no abuse is detected, the telephone lines used for transfer can be easily wiretapped by hackers, as the data is not encrypted. The monitoring centers state that there is no risk for the customers as long as they behave in a legitimate manner. I don't think it's that easy.
Another problem are junkies (and even non-junkies) attaching infected needles to door and flush knobs just to annoy passengers. In Kentucky a public toilet was closed for maintenance without the keeper watching for people left in the cabins. The three young men left behind were lucky enough that the maintenance work began the next day so they only had to stay one night in the toilet.

The common dollar bill has more germs than a public restroom. Use the restroom as normal and wash your hands and use a paper towel to open the door. If you are a germ-a-phob then you will want to use a paper seat cover, flush the toilet with your foot, wash you hands for 10 minutes, and try not to touch the door when exiting the restroom.

Toilet seats, and worst of all the doorknobs.
There was a tv show on that said, the doorknobs are the most dangerous place in the rest room, because people do not wash their hands after (you know). E-coli bacteria thrive
in warm, moist places such as on a doorknob
and it can kill you! Always use a paper towel
when you leave the rest room. Open the door,
hold it open with your foot, and throw the paper towel in the trash. Better safe than dead!

My biggest fear is how bad a mess will have been left behind by the people who used it before me. Some people seem feel free to trash these places.

well, there are actually reststops where people (namely gay guys) hit on each other. So if you're a guy you might get hit on ... which could very well be unwelcome.
Also, some weirdos can lurk around reststops at times. I'd say especialy if you're a girl and you're alone you'd want to be careful

The same thing as walking by a Van and having someone grab you from underneath it. Watch your back...never let your guard down..walk tall, and strong..kick butt attitude..pay attention to the vibes around you...and........carry a small bottle of anti-bacterial hand cleanser :)
