We are told to fear God only if we are wrong doers and if we think our deeds will not catch up to us eventually. But most greater than God's wrath is His mercy. He is the most Beneficient and the most Merciful. :)

People usually take the words "fear God" out of context. What the Bible refers to is not simply blind I'm-scared-out-of-my-mind fear, it's an awed recognition of his power. God has a very complex personality. That is why we have the whole notion of marriage. It's the closest representation of God that we have on this Earth. Males represent his strong, protective attributes, among other things, while females represent his sensitive, nurturing aspects, among other things. The fact is, "fear of God" refers to his ultimately powerful attributes, and remembrance of his ability to say, part the Red Sea and then drown all of his people's pursuers.

No, we are not supposed to be scared of God. When you hear the phrase "fear the Lord your God," it simply means to respect God. It is not fear as in being scared.

we are not supposed to be scared of God, we are to have respectful fear of God. being scared is like being scared of a hungry tiger. respectful fear is hearing your fathers authoritative voice from the other side of the house.

"The fear of God is the beginning of wisdom."

Not the end, but the beginning. Like can you imagine learning to drive a car if you didn't realize you could crash and kill people? But the fear of cars (the knowledge that they could hurt people) helps you drive more carefully.

Let's see what the bible answers for your question....

1 John 4

16We know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in him. 17In this way, love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment, because in this world we are like him. 18There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.

19We love because he first loved us. 20If anyone says, "I love God," yet hates his brother, he is a liar. For anyone who does not love his brother, whom he has seen, cannot love God, whom he has not seen. 21And he has given us this command: Whoever loves God must also love his brother.

"Supposed to"? According to who?

Don't believe everything you are told/read, particularly if it doesn't pass the common sense test. There are people who will lie to you on purpose, and there are even more who will pass on ancient rumours without question.
