My english springer spaniel puppy gets along great with other dogs, but he is weary of new people, i have only had him three weeks and hope i can help him overcome his scared, aggressive behavior. It is pretty obvious that he is fearful, i have tried to ignore him, which doesn't seem to help and to tell him no, but he doesn't get it.

this puppy was purchased from a breeder who seemed to take very good care of their dogs. They were all used to a variety of people as the breeders family was constantly around them. To my knowledge he was not abused by the breeder, all of his dogs appeared to be in ideal physical shape, however he did live in a pack of 10 other dogs and seems to understand dog society much better than humans as i would expect. He seems to be most aggressive at our house, we have been slowly introducing him to new people (only have had him 2 weeks) and he still gets aggressive with new people at my husband and my house. How should I handle his nervous behavior while it is happening now, before i can implement some of these training methods fully?

Did you get him from a shelter? if so, a lot of shelter dogs start out skiddish. i've had my 6yr old dog for a year and he'll probably always be skiddish. He loves everyone, he's just not very affectionate, and that's fine with me.
However, your puppy needs more socialization. Since she was in a shelter for however long she's probably still confused as to what's going on. Were you her first home? Just get her out more. Take her to petsmart where she's around tons of strangers and new smells, take her for walks every day, take her to obedience.. she needs to het used to being around new people all the time.
If she was from a pet store, then it just goes to show that you never quite know what you're getting when you go to pet stores! She probably has genetic problems.
IF you get her from a breeder, then contact the breeder you got her from and ask - they should be able to help!

The puppy was hurt by a man and you may notice that it is certain build of a man not all men. If the puppy has a male around him all the time and the male doesn't hurt him he might except that 1 guy. Dogs sometimes sense thinks about people that we can't, so the puppy could be sensing sometime about the person. Some dogs are just a woman's dog and puppy calls itself protecting you. If it is a woman's dog, it will be that way towards all men.

The dog may have been abused when younger, or not exposed to men. It is best for the men to ignore her, and then after a while when she is calm, they should gently toss small treats in her direction - but they should still basically ignore her until she decides to come to them. If she does, they should just move very slowly around her, speak softly, and let her smell the back of their hand. It would be best to consult w/ a positive trainer for this issue as the risk of someone getting bit is there.

My neighbor brought home a stray dog from where she worked a few years ago. This dog was afraid of it's own shadow, now he is the town pet. He comes over and visits, knocks on the door and everything. Everyone in our neighborhood knows Oliver and just loves him. He overcame his fear of people and your dog will too. It just takes time and lots of love. Try not to startle the dog and introduce it to a wide range of people so it can get properly socialized.

since you got him at 9 months of age, he may have been severely mistreated by other people prior to coming into your life. he may have overcome this fear with you, because he trusts you, etc. please be conscious of his fear, make sure the people you surround him with are genuine nice loving people. give him a chance to trust people again.

i know that at shelters and pet adoption programs, they sometimes will specify if a dog has a fear of children, men, etc...according to what abuse (if any) they have sustained.

good luck, sounds like your puppy needs a lot of love, and has thankfully found a good home!! :)

this works! try: teach your pup to "SIT" on command . this will teach him that he has control of his body. which will give him a stronger self confidence and less fear. this if a fearful behavior. and his confidence needs a boost. self control will do the trick. good luck.
