illegal aliens entering the country? My first response was "no, this can't be true. How can they do their jobs without being armed?" But in today's politically correct environment, anything is possible. This person went on to say president Vicente Fox protested armed guards on the border to President George Bush. Is this true?

Yes, both statements are true. The national guard are there as support for the Border Guards. The are helping to guard the border while additional guards are trained. They also are assisting in building systems to monitor the border as well as fencing. The way I understand it they monitor or patrol the border & when they view someone attempting entry they notify the Border Guard, or restrain with out lethal means the illegal immigrates.

That's true. The National Guard is there to build a fence right now, not to shoot poor Mexican immigrants. The Border Patrol handles that dirty work.

The National Guard will apprehend immigrants if the Border Patrol needs help, but they're not going to be able to patrol the border with M16 rifles. There are way too few guardsmen and way too many immigrants. Of course, I am sure they have rifles for certain situations, but they don't carry them around.

Vincente Fox is right to protest armed guards. First, that is extremely aggressive. Would you like 2,000 Guardsmen armed with assault rifles poised on the border with your country? Second, immigrants are not criminals. They shouldn't be shot down like dogs for trying to make a living for their families.

Oh, and in response to the New Orleans thing...think about it. It makes more sense for armed guardsmen in Orleans than on the border. Did the Mexicans loot everything? The guardsmen there act in a different role, a role of martial law. On the border they are acting in a surveillance and construction role.

Well anybody can tell you that there is no telling about this country these days. However, I have heard on the news not to long ago about the national guard haveing to gun down someone because they were a threat to them. Now, at the same time this may not be true so maybe you can go to like fox news or something and ask them if they have a spot where you can ask questions or maybe someone that is a part of the national guard will read your question and give you the correct answer because I am anxious to know that myself.

Because there is money to be made for large corporations by the wholesale use of those that cross the border of Mexico illegally. I see what is going on within New Orleans as nothing but a move for those in high places (rich and politically placed or connected) the ability to get property at a cheap rate where after they do get the property will then build up the land to above sea level as they have done in other places (example Galveston, Texas) at the taxpayers expense so that the land will then be very valuable.

Our national gaurd troops are NOT there to gaurd the border, they were sent there to serve as assistance for the border patrol and to provide assistance in setting up fences and survielance.
I think though that they should be armed and gaurding our nation, hence the term NATIONAL GUARD!!!
but bush thinks that a token gesture of this nauture will appease the angred Americans so he does not have to deal with it any longer.........and still looks good doing it
and yes The Mexican President did protest a militarized border...Instead the answer the Mexican government came up with was to create a National preserve area along 600 miles of the border with Texas....great more places for them to hide...

That is true. Most of the guard are not armed, they are there to do things like report illegals to the B.P. ( HEY,doesn't this sound like ANOTHER group of people that everyone has been calling VIGILANTES??) The BORDER PATROL, on the other hand, IS armed!! The border is a DANGEROUS place to be,with all the drug runners, rapists. and murderers,SNEAKING into the country! Did you know, there has been OVER two hundred incursions into the U.S.,by the MEXICAN military, just THIS year alone??!!!

Of course they're armed. I live in a border town. Our Border Patrol agents are armed, the National Guard is armed. However, they usually limit the firepower they carry (usually to what any other police officer would carry on routine patrol) because the objective is capture, not termination... actually, they're trying to save the lives of those poor, ignorant dreamers who think they can cross many miles of desert in over 90 degree weather. They pull dead bodies out on a regular basis, almost all dying due to dehydration and heat stroke (sometimes the "coyotes" -- the pirates who take advantage of these people and charge them money to take them across the border -- take the money and abandon the victims, violently).

The danger to the border guards isn't from the illegals crossing to find real work, but from drug mules and "coyotes". The border guards must have enough defensive weaponry in case they come across drug dealers running their goods, or any "coyotes," either of whom of course are perfectly willing to kill anyone in order to take care of business.

They are not guarding the border but doing the support work so the Border Patrol can guard the border (see typing reports, watching the office, etc.)

Only in 'hotspots' they are only there for support. If an illegal came up to them, they could walk right past them and they couldn't do anything - except contact border patrol. They aren't trained to detain anyone - yet.

Fox protested? The senator from Connecticut put on the Senate bill that we would relinquish our soverienty on our side of the border to Mexico - and we just walk away unless Mexico approved otherwise.

Dar, I saw that in the news, too - the armed Mexican border patrol were helping to escort a drug run into the USA. Disgusting! The NG and even the Minutemen should all be armed because of what they are up against.
