A handicap is the number of strokes you should get when playing against a scratch (0 handicap) golfer. Let's say you have a 15 handicap. Then, you would get a stroke on the 15 hardest holes on a golf course. Every scorecard has a row for the hole number, par, yardage, and handicap. The holes are numbered from 1 through 18 by which holes should be handicapped, 1 usually being the hardest hole on the golf course and 18 being the easiest. So you would get a stroke on handicap holes 1-15. If you were a 15 handicap and your opponent was a 12, then you would only get a stroke on each of the 3 hardest holes. Most people just say that their handicap is their average over par score.

A handicap is used to even out a match if players are not the same skill level. It is a number based on how many shot over par to take for 18 hole (on Average). Eah player get extra stokes on some holes to make the match competitive. This way the person playing the best golf based on their capacity wins not just the lowers score. Professional matches do not use handcaps.
