Coffee and tea both contain caffeine, which acts as a diuretic in the body. This means that as the chemical properties of caffeine take effect, it increase urine output. Therefore, when you drink caffeine you actually end up losing more water through waste (urine) than the amount of liquid you consumed.

well, coffee and tea contains also-caffeine. Caffeine acts as a diuretic in the body. So drinking beverages that contain caffeine in effort to hydrate yourself is counterproductive. Caffeinated beverages do not count towards your daily fluid intake. that's why...so, a better choice still is water...

Because of the chemicals that are in them. Your kidneys have to filter the chemicals out, and that takes additional water, more than you are ingesting with the coffee/tea.

Because of caffeine. Caffeine contains Theobromine (12%) – Dilates blood vessels and increases urine volume. The increased urine volume=thirst=dehydration.
