I have a one year old Yorkie. She needs to have her nails clipped and get groomed... The problem is that she is sooooo strong that I can't hold her down to do either. I want to take her to a groomer, but I'm sure they will have the same problem. How do groomers handle dogs like her? Can my vet give her a sedative to put to to sleep or something?? What is common practice for groomers?

Honestly if its a yorkie im sure it wont be a problem, a sedative probably wont be needed, we usually save those for the aggressive animals, the groomer deals with animals like that all the time, they have a tie that they tie around the dogs neck(not in a bad way, just like a leash) that keeps them under control and still, if worse comes to worse they might have to have a technician or a TA hold the dog while she grooms it, but honestly the groomer whould be able to handle it.

A groomer will not have the same problem. They use restraints (humane ones) that hold the dogs head up in such a position that it makes it hard for them to squirm, and they basically hold the dogs body between one arm and their body, and grasp the foot with the same hand, and clip with the other hand. Also, the dog realizes that it cannot get away with the same routine with the groomer as it can get away with with Mommy. Dogs are like kids; they know what they can get away with at home, but school is another thing. Take her to a groomer; they can handle it. If you find a nice one, they might even be willing to show you how they do it.

I have the SAME problem! My overly hyper Yorkie never sits still. We take him to the groomer because we can't handle his wiggling when we even try to brush his hair. The groomers have special harnesses that don't hurt them and they hold them in place. They know what they're doing, so don't worry about. A sedative is definitely NOT a good idea. It could cause health issues much bigger than her hyperactivity. Just take her to the groomers and talk to them. It's common for dogs to be annoyed and wiggly while being groomed. :)

Trust me my 2 year old male yorkie is the same way. Take her to the groomer they will have no problem with her, because she doesn't know them and will not act up. It is not a good idea to give her a sedative just to be groomed. Best of Luck

I got my first Yorkie when he was 1 year old, he did great. I have a new puppy, 3 months old, he let me trim his nails when he was tiny, now he won't sit still for anything. The vet should be able to clip them, or take her to a groomer. They will be able to do it. Just be sure they are not cut too short. My little guy has dark nails and it is tough to see where the quick is, and I do not want to cut them too short and cause him to bleed. Sedatives are a bit much. If nothing else, take her for walks on cement, it should wear them down a bit.

My yorkie is the same way, but my groomer doesnt seem to have a problem. I do spend a few minutes every day brushing and getting him used to being handled that way. Tricks are to give little treats along the way, talk softly, and quit before they are really really agitated.

Try just making her an appointment. Groomers have lots of gizmos and tricks for getting wiggly dogs to be still. If she is unmanagable, the groomer will tell you to get sedatives.
I'm thinking though, you're just being to easy on her. A groomer will have better luck.

I would take her to a groomer. I have a yorkie that bites whenever people touch his nails but the groomers always deal very well with him. As long as I leave; if he sees me there he acts as worse, much like kids. Please don't drug the dog.

Find a groomer who has worked with Yorkies. It's amazing what a dog will let a stranger do who is experienced in working with dogs.

Take them to a groomer, in order to groom they must be trained to take care of hyper and out of ocntrol dogs. If you are worried ask if you can stay and watch to make sure they take good care of your dog. Good luck!
