I had one last year, and it was a piece of cake. My colon was perfect, nothing there. The worst thing for me was the prep to clean you system out, but that was nothing compared to when I had food poisoning. I was given a light sedative, and was actually awake sometimes. I saw the pictures on the screen couple times, but dosed off. No pain, Just some bloating from the air they put in you.

I have had two colonoscopies and both were pretty different.
The day before a colonoscopy, you can only have a liquid diet and you can't have anything that is red or purple. Later in the day, you will need to take a medicine to flush out your bowels.
The first time I had one, I had to mix this extremely salty medicine with soda. It was so bad that even when I plugged my nose, I could still taste it. I gagged the entire time and almost threw up. My colonoscopy was the following day. The nurse said she gave me enough medicine in my iv to knock out someone twice my size... but I never fell asleep and wound up being awake the whole procedure. They said if I was awake, I probably wouldn't remember anything as the medicine causes slight amnesia.. but that wasn't true either. When they inserted the scope, it cramped up my stomach a little, but other than that, I really couldn't feel anything. There was a screen where you could view what the scope was seeing. Unfortunately for me, the colonoscopy did not find the source of my problems, although it did show that I have internal hemorrhoids.
The second time I had a colonoscopy went much better. I was able to mix a medicine called Miralax, which is almost completely tasteless, with a clear beverage. I chose Gatorade because I get easily dehydrated. When I got to my doctor's office, I explained that I had not fallen asleep the last time I had a colonoscopy (which was with a different doctor). They told me I was guaranteed to fall asleep as they use a different medication. An anesthesiologist put a mask over my face, said I would feel a tingle and then fall asleep within 30 seconds and he was right. Everything went fine with this procedure, but once again, the colonoscopy didn't show the source of my problems.

I perform the procedure and most people sleep through the whole thing. They wake up 15 min later and it was a snap. The benefit over the virtual colonoscopy (CT scan, noninvsive) is that if something is found we can resolve the issue, hense already in there. Otherwise another prep and another day of surgery. If lesion free, virtual is the easiest. With both exams, PREPare. The PREP is the most important thing U can do. It is the also the hardest part. No food and lots of time in the bathroom. But WELL worth it. If your mother didn't tell U, GO GET YOUR COLONOSCOPY!!

I did not feel a thing. I am a 45 year old female. The nurse told me she was going to give me some I don't give a **** medicine. lol I was allowed to watch but was way to droesy. I felt no pain before during or after.. Maybe it was just a very good doctor I don't know but i had polyps and I am glad I had it done because those were removed. It is time for another checkup in that area. Better to be safe then sorry .

I had a colonoscopy this year in February 2006. I wrote a 20-page paper of my experience - with all the details (my thoughts, concerns, fear, emotions, procedure, etc.). If you'd be interested in reading it - please e-mail me at dfcoley@yahoo.com and I will send it to you. I also have a couple of very informative websites I found - one of which is a free 10-12 minute video of "the colonoscopy process". (NOTE: I am female).

Colonoscopy is taking the picture of insde of the colon.
Colon is last 4-6 inches of the large intestine, where food waste is collected for toilet.
In recent years it came to light that many young men died of the coloncancer , and when the cancer was diagnosed, it was too late.
This cancer had no symptoms till it was already advanced.
I saw one case myself, where a 28 year young man was rushed to hospital form work, he was given 9 months and he died in 9 months.
It is for this reason that in USA there is more awarenes and more people get colonoscopy for early detection of cancer.
No I haven't had itcolonoscopy. But they give a glass of barium to drink before the procedure. you have to have empty stomuch the nite before. It is not pain ful, but mouth feels bad for awhile.

Well the pre-op stuff is worse than the actual thing, you know the whole no eating and the laxatives. I was put out for it so during it I was fine but before I was scared to death and tried to run away. During you can't feel anything, but after I was a little sore. My doctor let me keep the pictures of my insides, which showed inflammation and ulcers throuhgout my intestines and stomach(I had an endoscopy at the same time).
Oh and might I add that the laxative I had was VILE!!!!!!!!!!

ihad my first one recently. just thought i should get one. im 50. they found and removed one large pollup. never felt it when they removed it. worst part of the whole procedure was after. when they do the colonoscopy, they have to insert air. you get cramps after for about 2 hours. then you start passing gas and its gone. other than that, its a piece of cake.

The clinic where I had mine was very good and so was my doctor. I was dreading it so bad, but I actually felt nothing and came home feeling all right. They give you something to make you sort of 'out of it' and it doesn't hurt!! I'm sure it effects people differently, but the conscensus of those I know who've had it says it is okay!
