I like the Katana/Tachi, but to me, its just a sword that has its pros n cons. But i heard freaks who r so obsessed with it saying it would cut a Claymore into halves. If you love the Katana, please give your reason(s) why?

Is it the sword that makes a warrior great? Or is it the warrior him or herself that elevates skill, regardless of the chosen weapon? Is it merely having the sword that distinguishes the warrior? Is it the way that it is made that distinguishes the sword itself? Is it the blacksmith who made it?

I happen to believe that the myths regarding swords are all one and the same. No style of sword is better than another. It has to do with the tempering of the steel. All over the world, there have been swordsmiths who beat, hammer and fold the steel, and use complex welding processes to make their weapons. There are bad katanas and superior katanas, just like there are bad broadswords and superior broadswords.

But even more importantly, the sword is only as good as its wielder. It's the warrior who makes the sword, not the other way around. The training that goes into the making of a warrior (mind, body and spirit) is much more important than any other aspect of this whole question.

To understand this, one needs to make a detailed study of history to understand the underlying philosophies of any of the cultures pertinent to the question. Look at the social organization of Japan during its history and compare it to Europe, Eastern Asia, the Middle East, South East Asia, etc. One must ask then, how did the society help or hinder the creation of a warrior caste? When did each society reach its own state of decline, where the warrior caste devolved into a class of mere soldiers? (I will probably offend a few folks when I say that there is a great difference between a soldier and a warrior.)

How does a society's value system affect the values a warrior has in regards to combat, both on an individual level and on a larger scale such as between armies? This is the heart of the whole issue, isn't it?

It isn't about swords or this or that. It's about the people. Who were the men and women who fought the battles? and whom did they fight? what venues did they fight in? single combat or in armies? what was the technology like at the time? what raw and refined materials were available to the blacksmiths who made the weapons? what tactics did they use? who were the leaders?

Learn more about history, and you'll see that it's the story of the people more than the story of the things, that affects who wins and who loses. And as Mel Gibson said in the movie, "Braveheart" - "History is written by those who have hanged heroes." Or to put it another way - to the victor goes the spoils.

Peace.

most people think the katana or any sword from traditional japan will cut lesser grade steel mainly because of Hollywood saying this is so and partly because in history when the samurai came up against the armies of other countries with their low grade iron swords this did happen on occasion but other countries also made exceptional quality swords only in those countries this quality was for the very wealthy where as in japan a samurai had exceptional quality weapons no matter if he was rich or not generally his lord made sure he had the best quality ...many other types of sword made out of the same grade of steel will break a katana it all comes down to equal strength and thicker dimensions and of course the skill of the person using it.....

the katana is a weapon that will be limited only by the skill of the user, the practitioner will have to rise to the challenge the weapon provide

a small person and a giant will be equal when they are both carrying katanas, because it's not a matter of strength anymore but the mind, and this is why they're different from weapons of other countries

it's very strong and flexible, built to slash, not strike, has hundreds of styles and stances you can train in.

and lastly, train the katana while wearing hakama ( japanese traditional clothing ) - IT'S COOL! :D

I don't know why some freaks out there love it so much, but i know why I do. The way they are crafted makes them such a beautiful sword. The feel of one in your hand is amazing. It's hard to explain why there is such a love for the Katana. I just think they are killer swords.

This girl obviously had serious issues way before she got into the whole "emo" thing. I for one cannot believe that the father did not take it more seriously when he saw the cuts on her arm- that surely should have sent alarm bells ringing. This is a tragic death, but as for blaming it on MCR, that's just pathetic. "Suicide cult" band? Don't make me laugh....How many times have MCR said that suicide is bullsh*t and spoken out against the "emo" trend? People need to wake up and stop blaming what is becoming a serious problem amongst the youth of today on rock bands. Just another example of people being afraid of what they fail to understand.

It's a beautiful thing to see when someone knows how to use one. And it's more personal than a gun in battle.
