I and my brother both have had crohns for over 20 years and we have gone through many different treatments. I had emergency surgery to repair my when I was 21. After my second major flareup I started taking sulfazalizine which helped a lot. About 5 years ago I stopped taking the medication and now feel great - no flareups.

My brother had several surgeries, finally after his third surgery he is not having anymore flareups but needs to take lots of vitamins, some through injections. But he is feeling well.

Personally I feel that eating right and taking good care of yourself along with the medications the doctor may prescribe is important.

I would be glad to exchange emails with your daughter and chat more with her about crohns. Today there has been so much more advancement in the treatment and so many more successes.

I wish your daughter much success in overcoming crohns.

This is a very difficult disease to manage because flare-ups come and go often. For just starting out with it, I imagine she has difficulty with diarrhea and needing to go to the bathroom a lot. It is importnat at this point to give her privacy but at the same time remain supportive. Also, try to have her avoid situations where she will be unable to get to a restroom within a few seconds if at all possible. If she is still in school, I would advise you to inform her instructors of the problems so she will not be denied bathroom priviliges even if it's during an exam or whatever. The biggest thing is for her to not have feelings of embarresment. The physical symptoms are bad enough. She will have times where she feels great and then when a flare-up occurs she will feel awful. Unfortunately this is the nature of the disorder. I would also advise you to find a specialist in Inflammatory bowel disorders (Crohns and Ulcerative Colitis). Good luck with everything!
