They have very sensetive ears, when the phone rings, door bell goes off etc. it is because it hurts there ears. I read it in Dogs USA

Dogs may be howling because they want to come inside, there is someone outside, they hear another dog, they are mad

My dog howls when my daughter plays her piccolo. I think he howls because the high pitched sound causes him pain.

maybe they've seen something we cant see?
that's how we hear all the dogs in the neighbourhood howling at the same time.
it can get really scary!

sometimes something is upsetting them. our shepherd used to howl at sirens; i imagine that was because the noise bothered her.
