It's a sign of obsessive compulsive disorder, and also has it's own sub-genre - compulsive skin picking (csp). It's not normal, as you know, but many people, me included, do it, and I know how hard it is to stop. You could try the link below, and message me if you want to talk about it.

Once you find out let me know this one. My mom and my daughter are non stop thur out the day. I think it's from thick hair and dry scalp. I've known alot of people who have the same habit. It's just like biting nails. Try putting oil on the spots that are dry and it will flake up the next day. Also just try to break the habit.

Yup, see a dermatologist--though your family doc may be able to help. Most folks don't have dead skin on their scalps (or anywhere else to speak of), so there's a problem. It may not be serious, but obviously it bugs you.

try switching to a shampoo that doesnt kill your skin. if that fails, wear a hat.
