Hitting a Draw

To draw the ball from right-to-left, you want your clubhead to enter the hitting area from inside the target line. The simplest approach is to close your address position. In other words, pull your trail side back from the target line.

This sets your feet, knees, hips and shoulders in position to make an inside-to-down-the-line-to-inside swing, which will put a counter-clockwise spin on the ball, causing it to curve to the left.

You need to aim the clubface where you want the ball to start. This swing shape will allow your arms and club to rotate faster than your body through the hitting area. Meanwhile, this swing thought will also help ensure that you swing along a proper inside-to-outside path to produce a draw.

The best club to practice a draw or a fade with is a 5-iron, since it has enough loft to easily get the ball airborne, while still putting enough sidespin on the ball. The more loft a club has, the more difficult it is to curve the ball.

When playing a draw shot, the ball tends to have lower flight and run farther than it would if it were played with a standard shot, because you are actually taking "effective" loft off the club. In other words, a 5-iron will really have the loft of a 4-iron at impact. So, make sure that you select a club with enough loft to play this shot.

It is difficult to hit a hook with a long iron, because the shape of your swing causes the clubface to close down as it reduces the true and effective loft of the club.

Conversely, you need to address the ball with a slightly open stance when hitting a fade -- with your target or forward foot pulled back away from the target line. This promotes both taking the club away from and returning to the ball outside the target line. This swing path allows the clubface to cut across the ball at impact, producing a clockwise spin that curves the ball from left-to-right.

Because the swing you make with a fade places the body ahead of the club, a fade will cause the ball to fly higher than normal and often stop more quickly when it hits the ground. As a result, many people believe it is a safer, more easily controlled shot than a draw.

However, keep in mind that the shape of a fade swing actually increases the effective loft of a club. While the ball will fly higher than a normal shot, it won't carry as far. So, in effect, when playing a fade shot with an 8-iron, you will actually produce a shot that has the trajectory and distance of an 8 1/2-iron.

Learning how to draw the ball will definitely help your game. Being able to move the ball both ways will not only allow you to access many more pin locations, but will make doglegs much less challenging, especially those that call for a draw. Plus, it just makes playing so much more fun when you can move the ball either direction at will! If you're having trouble drawing your tee shots, before messing around with your ball position, make sure that you are actually TURNING back enough in your swing first. Many, many players just don't create enough shoulder turn in their backswings, and instead compensate for that by lifting their arms. Doing that more often than not causes your arms to cut across the ball at impact, causing a slice/fade. When I finally overcame this problem myself I focused getting my chest to point behind me. It was a very weird feeling at first because I felt like I could never turn back through to hit the ball, but I was wrong. My own handicap has dropped significantly as I can now hit a powerful draw. If turning back isn't your problem, you can try moving the ball slightly forward in your stance, dropping your back foot back couple of inches (thereby closing your stance relative to your target), strengthening your grip, or a combination of all of those. Your best bet would be to get a lesson or two from your local PGA professional. He or she will know exactly how to help you improve your game the most. Good luck, and happy golfing!

For me to hit a cut, I must line up a draw. To hit a draw, I line up to hit a cut. I can hit the fairway most of the time, just not for the hole from which I am hitting.

Seriously, my understanding is that a draw come from opening your stance and placing the ball a bit forward from your usual position, while a cut comes from a slightly tigher stand, with the ball a bit back.

However, based on my opening line, you may want to read some other answers. If had any higher a handicap, I could park in the front row at the mall......

If you hit the ball fairly straight most of the time, it should be easy to shape the ball. The easiest way to do this accurately is to line your feet and body up to where you want the ball to start. Then set your clubface down so it faces where you want the ball to land, and swing along your body. Make sure you compensate for the added roll and sidespin. Also, putting the ball an inch or two forward in your stance (more towards your left foot if you're right handed) will promote a high fade, while putting it back in your stance will produce a low draw.

Like to add Doug's answer. The old days, Jack Nikclaus used to teach the draw and fade by close and open club face at address, while close up the stand for draw and open the stand for fade. There are so many factors promoting draw and fade; eg. close and open club face, weaken left hand and weak right hand (and opposit), lighter pressure on left hand, or lighter pressure on right hand.

All in all, you want to make the ball spin counter clockwise for a draw and clockwise for the fade so anything that promote that would ensure your ball flight would go the way you wanted to. Oddly though, the natural swing of anybody, should it hit the ball correctly, will promote a little natural draw. Try do one thing at a time at the driving range and see its effect.
