Ok, I was born in Ancón, Panama. My parents are both US Citizens and I have a birth abroad certificate. Do I have citizenship in Panama also, and if so, what rights do I have living in the US?

Another question:
How can I get my Panamanian birth certificate? I have one, but it is getting very fragile and torn.

Additional Details

I am saying rights in Panama. What do I have there? Sorry for not specifying....lol

Panama is one of the few countries - like the US - in which birth in the country automatically accords citizenship. See
http://www.multiplecitizenship.com/wscl/ws_PANAMA.html

Because you were born of American parents and you have a CRBA, you are also a US citizen. You may live in the US just as every US citizen does, with all rights and obligations. You are entititled to a US passport, and must use it to enter and leave the US.

Although you were born a Panamanian citizen, under Panamanian law you are supposed to decide which citizenship you want to retain - US or Panamanian - when you turn 18. The US, on the other hand, does not have any laws against dual citizenship.

You can ask the US Embassy in Panama City (American Citizen Services) if Panama actually enforces that law or not. You can also ask the Panamanian Embassy in Washington. The address and phone number are in the link I gave you above.

By the way, you should know that, as a dual national, if you ever get into trouble in either country, you will be treated exactly like every other citizen of that country. For example, if you're arrested in Panama, the US Embassy will not be able to assist you; you are Panamanian when you're in Panama.

Since you want a copy of your Panamanian birth certificate, I suggest you call or write the Panamanian Embassy in Washington. They should be able to tell you how to get it.
