I'm thinking of using six 901s for a surround array. The problem is with today's 5.1 Dolby Digital and DTS receivers there's no way to incorporate the required active EQ because the tape loop is automatically bypassed when digital surround is selected. What does the 901 active EQ actually do and what would the 901s sound like in a surround array without it?

I myself am a Bose basher but even I have to admit that the 901 is possibly one of the best sounding, most transparent speakers of all time.

Good question. I owned 2 pair of 901's that I used to drive them with a Phase Linear 1000 (1000w rms). They did kick butt, but I wouldn't really call them "transparent".
Anyway, to your question...the reason the 901's need the Bose EQ is because each 901 is actually just 9 ported mid-range drivers. Without an active EQ, all you'll get is a hell of a lot of mid-range. Because of this limitation you may have to try contacting Bose and asking them if there is some hack or work-around. Otherwise, I think the sound will suck. However, I'd bet that unless your goal is to literally shake your house apart, using 5,6, or 7 Bose 301's in the surround sound mode would be great. Alot of people (incl me) think that the 301 has always been the best sounding Bose speaker.

what you could do would be to get 6 multi speaker units, like a speaker switch, that would allow you to run the speaker leads to 2 locations. Then get 6 of the Russound ADP1.2 adapters that take a speaker level lead up to 200 watts and converts the to a line level lead. Run one of each set of speaker leads to the Bose 901s and run the other of each set into the ADP1.2 and then RCA jacks out to the Bose EQ. If you have enough power, because the BOSE 901s are very power hungry, it should sound good.

Not without the EQ. The 901's are designed around the EQ and will sound a lot worse without it.

The only thing I can suggest is to get five monoblocks to run each of the five 901s and connect them to the R, L, C, RS preamp outputs on your receiver.

Have fun experimenting!
