if you are a mechanic in the army, yes you will get time off to do whatever you want. there wont be anyone breathing down your back all the time unless if you get into trouble. sometimes you will work long hours and others you will get off early. the army has one 3 or 4 day weekend a month which is nice. you will usually work M-F starting out doing PT at 6:30 until 7:30, then you go home to shower and eat breakfast and come back to work at 9 and get off at 5. mechanics usually get all weekends off. now if you get deployed or your unit is getting ready to deploy you wont get much time off. getting ready to deploy takes a lot of work and you will work a lot. and when you are deployed there is no such thing as a day off but you will get personal time every day to do what you want. if you want to get weekends and holidays off DONT be a cook, MP, or a medic, they dont get weekends off. hope that helps you.

A lot of the hours you work will depend on your MOS (or job), and where you are stationed. Usually, when you are not preparing to deploy or getting ready for a field exercise, you will be at work between 05:30 - 06:30 for an hour or two of PT (Physical Training). You will go back to your room with time to take a shower, change into your uniform and eat breakfast. There will be a formation at 09:00 usually where you will get your assignment for the day. Lunch will typically be from 11:30/12:00 until 13:00(1pm). Back to the motor pool (if you are a mechanic) until 17:00/18:00 and then off for the day - on a TYPICAL day. But you must remember that the military is NOT- I repeat -NOT a 9-5 job. There will be many, many days that you will work until midnight. You will work weekends and holidays. You will be put on 24-hour duty. But a lot of commanders understand that, and if there is nothing going on, they may let you leave work at 15:00 to have some free time. The really good commanders know how to strike a balance between work and free time.

Yeah you will get alot of time off, more than most civilians do who work full time jobs. Unless you are deployed, or our doing field training you can expect to have weekends off unless of course you have some sort of weekend duty you need to do. In addition every major holiday, and federal holiday you will get a four day weekend. In addition you recieve your thirty days of paid leave a year. I advise you to use it wisely. Most units during the Christmas holidays go on a halfday schedule of getting off work by noon or a little bit after for a week or two.
Now since you are going to be a mechanic you might expect to work longer hours than most in your unit. I know alot of times I've gotten off work at 1700 or 1800 and the mechanics have had to stay and work till nearly 2100 at night. This doesn't happen always, but there is a good chance of it. Most mechanics look at it as they might as well put in the extra hours in the week so they dont have to come in on the weekend and do it.
So for the most part you will get a fair share of time off. Just don't sweat it too much when you have to go to the field for training, or when you get deployed. It's just part of the life.

You'll have free time, but it never seems like enough. I've been on an exercise for the last two weeks, working 13-hour days. Most days, you'll work about ten and a half hours. You'll be able to go to the gym, but you'll be doing PT every day, anyway. Some days you'll come home absolutely exhausted.

yes and no, in many assignments you will merely be working certain hours, going home like you do at any job on the street.
But there will be times you will be required to stay on base during alerts, next you will be on 24 hours days in war zones at times
