Well first you must decide, theme or no? That leads to color. The following website is great to help with that.

Then on to other things. Do you want wallpaper, need new curtains, bedspread, etc. I found this great paintable wallpaper which i am using on the bottom half of my walls like wainscoting for a reasonable price at the following website and they have the curtains etc too.

Decorate your room with things that interest you, forget about what's hot or in style- that changes so quickly. You will never get bored of it if you have stuff you like around you. You could use a projector and project an image on the wall and do a wall mural of it. that's always cool.

Theme it!! just think of ONE thing you LOVE and go with it...you can make stuff like your lampshade to personalize it alittle, and other stuff as well. Make your walls something that relaxes you but is fun! just have fun, there are no rules! Do you collect anything....?? Maybe do it around that.
