$1,000 in cash is a bit outrageous to give as a gift to a couple. Unless you know that they're going to spend it wisely like to help pay off the wedding expenses for example, I would only recommend giving a gift card to their favorite restaurant or a store they shop often. This way they can buy whatever they need or want. A gift card to their favorite restaurant would give them a chance for a night out whenever they don't feel like cooking. You can purchase gift cards at a discounted price on eBay, but hurry, they sell fast!

Money and gift cards are always good. If that's too impersonal, think of something practical that her and her husband could use in their home.

What does she like to do? Hobbies?
You could pay for the hotel stay for their honeymoon.
Buy a negligee for her to seduce her new hubbie in.
I don't know your sister so I'm not sure what to suggest.
