I have a cousin who is 32 and hasn't had a real relationship yet, she's straight, good looking, very nice, but seems afraid to talk to guys. She's taken the job of taking care of his younger brother, who had a car accident and was left partly disabled, but i really wouldn't like to see her taking the role of nurse to him forever. She does like to party and go out, but when a guy approaches her, she shuts herself off for him. What is a good, tactful way to approach the matter?

In this case your cousin has low self-esteem and has already committed herself to her brother and therefore in her mind she is unappealing and unavailable. She has taken herself off the market, but in saying that she will feel a need to be loved by a man which confuses everything. These mixed emotions will cause her to shut down when a man approaches her whether she is attracted to him or not.

The solution lies in building up her self-esteem and providing long term options of support for her brother. Maybe this is too hard for your or others around her, so I would recommend professional counseling and community welfare organizations to provide assistance, for example home help. Anyhow goodluck because it can be hard to watch someone you care about give up!

The woman may be shy, or might have had bad boys date her or try to date her.

invite her to dinner with a couple of your guy and girls friends, but invite more guys and maybe one or two girls.
