There is a scripture that says you cannot enter the kingdom of heaven unless you are like a child, so they qualify automatically, same as a child.

Comprehension is all in the ways that you see it. We, "normal people", comprehend through sight and sound and feel and touch and taste and smell. Challenged people comprehend in much greater ways, by contacting the auras of a person. Have you ever noticed how a challenged person can fear someone you know has hurt someone yet he/she has never been exposed to the hurt? they can sense things just as they sense Jesus, God and the Heavans as a whole. they are not as easily enticed into sin as we seemingly normal people are. They are much stronger than we are and they see Jesus everyday. In every person who has chosen the Path to God. Salvation can only be achieved if you have a great will, strong determination and Faith in the Good Lord Almighty. Just as they do.

It is not about comprehending Jesus. You can know Jesus, but that does not bring you into heaven It is having a personal relationship with him. God Know everyones heart who is pure and who is not pure for him. it states in the word. I will know you by your fruit. If you accept him in your heart and confess he is lord, and ask him to forgive you of your sins, from that moment you are saved. The handicap ( a better term to use). they are ordinary people just like us, they are no different than us, other than having a disability, we all have a disablilty in some area in our life. Their's is just physical. We Not just the handicap have a hard time comprehending Jesus. but with his help he will guide us and lead us the way we should go.

I am a Christian and was actually thinking about this the other day myself. The way I see it the mentally retarded are like children, they do not have the capacity to make informed decisions therefore they would already have salvation, just as children and babies do.

Children, even unborn children, are not automatically saved as so many think, neither would those who suffer from mental retardation be. They are conceived into sin and know the scriptures from youth.
Psalm 51:5
Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me.
Deuteronomy 5
9 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, 10 but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.
2 Timothy 3
14But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, 15and how from infancy you have known the holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.
There is no excuse for men.
Romans 1
18The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness, 19since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. 20For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.
Psalm 19:1
The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.

The same way those who have never heard of Jesus or salvation do. By living love (agape)to the best of there ability. Do unto others... God can impress an individual heart with his love, and he only expects us to live up to what we have been given. To those given little, little is expected, But to those given much, much more is expected. Do you really think a loving God will condemn because someone has never heard or cannot understand?

Actually, I think those that are mentally retarded can comprehend Jesus much better than we can. They see Him more simply than we do.

"Mentally retarded" doesn't always mean that they cannot make decisions for themselves. There are many people who even a decade ago would have been considered unable to care for themselves but now we know that they are fully cognitive in their minds.
Back to your question: The Word is clear, however, that all will have the chance. Maybe it isn't under the same circumstances as many of us enjoy, but they will have their moment to choose.
