also it's used like:
vete a hacer puñetas = get lost! go to hell!
a hacer puñeteas = the hell with it
as a noun (mostly in latin america): masturbation (for males only)

In decent Mexican, a puñeta is a tool used by people in auto body shops to repair dents in cars, and they have to use their fists - puño is a fist in Spanish, thus the word puñeta.
Puñeta is also used when referring to someone really stupid, or as they might also say in Spanish, a Pendejo. The word is quite commonly used but vulgar all the same.
